Alyssa Farah Griffin, a former Trump administration official and current co-host of The View, has strongly criticized conservative commentators for their reaction to a deadly shooting in Minnesota involving a federal immigration agent.
The incident in question saw a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer fatally shoot 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three, during an enforcement operation in Minneapolis; a moment that was captured on video and has since ignited national debate.
Griffin took issue not just with the shooting itself but with the speed at which many on the right rushed to use the footage to reinforce their own political narratives. “I saw people on the right just repeatedly just putting out the same video, that I saw something very different with my own eyes, but it needed to fit their partisan narrative, it needed to back the jersey that they wear,” she said, according to HuffPost.
Republicans turned a tragedy into a political talking point
Since the shooting, a number of prominent Republicans, including President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance, have publicly defended the federal response and criticised Good in ways that have drawn sharp controversy.
President Trump took to social media and to interviews shortly after the incident to shift blame onto Good, describing her behaviour at the scene as “very disorderly” and alleging she obstructed and resisted federal agents.
Vice President J.D. Vance has taken an especially combative tone. In public remarks and social media posts, he defended the ICE agent’s actions as justified self‑defense, asserted that Good’s death was “a tragedy of her own making.”
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the shooting happened because of “an act of domestic terrorism.” DHS called Good a “violent rioter” in a social media post. The president has faced growing criticism, with some suggesting Trump’s controversial actions could lead to impeachment.
“When did we become a country that a woman my age and a mother of three is killed … and our first thought is, ‘How do I make this a win for the party I vote with?’” Griffin said. “I find it sickening.” Griffin also pointed out that Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, first disagreed with Noem’s defense of the shooting.
Homan told CBS Evening News that it would be unprofessional to comment and that they should let the investigation finish. Meanwhile, Trump’s oil blockade faced challenges from Russia as international tensions continue to rise. However, Homan later changed his position. He said the shooting was another tragic example of hateful words and violent attacks against federal immigration agents.
