Jeanine Pirro has put herself in an awkward position. Donald Trump’s interim United States attorney for the District of Columbia appeared on Fox News on Sunday to make a firm proclamation against Americans’ Second Amendment right to bear arms.
Leaving zero ambiguity, she said:
“You bring a gun into the District, you mark my words, you’re going to jail. I don’t care if you have a license in another district and I don’t care if you’re a law-abiding gun-owner somewhere else. You bring a gun into this district, count on going to jail, and hope you get the gun back.”
Gun advocates were horrified to hear a statement like this from a Republican. After all, the politicians seizing firearms from law-abiding gun owners are supposed to be Democrats! The instant anger from the MAGA base over her comments has pushed into a rapid and frantic climbdown in which she’s tried to explain herself.
Soon after the story broke, she took to social media to insist that she’s “a proud supporter of the Second Amendment“. This apparently wasn’t good enough, so she’s now released a faux-casual video explaining that, actually, we’re all idiots and this is really no big deal:

Pirro once again claims to be a supporter of the Second Amendment and says she herself owns multiple guns. But she goes on to underline that she is, indeed, going to crack down on firearms:
“Every responsible gun owner that I know makes sure that they understand the laws where they are going and whatever registration requirements there might be. President Trump’s goal here and my goal as well is to make sure we take guns out of the hands of criminals.”
A swing and a miss…
Whoever’s in charge of Pirro’s social media should probably lose their job, as this condescending video seems to have infuriated everyone who watched it. We just heard her openly explain that “I don’t care if you’re a law-abiding gun-owner”, so her claiming we misunderstood her is a bit rich!
Judging by the responses, few in MAGA have been convinced. One painfully but accurately dubs her as sounding “like a leftist pretending to be a conservative”, another says “the mask has come off”, that she is committing “industrial grade hypocrisy”:
“You said what you said, we all saw and heard it, now you are going to “Explain it to us like we are toddlers” that you didn’t say it?”
On the list of things you definitely shouldn’t do as a Republican, saying that you’re planning to seize the firearms of law-abiding Americans is right up there with campaigning for socialized healthcare, trans rights, and reparations for slavery. It’s simply not gonna fly with the base.
Are her days in office numbered? Judging by this desperate attempt to contain the controversy, we suspect they might be.
