Fox News has been gloomy ever since the first midterm results came in. Since it became apparent that the blue wave was more of a blue tsunami, various hosts and talking heads have tried to explain away the crushing loss.
Right now they seem determined to echo the White House line that this not only isn’t Donald Trump’s fault, but that the war with Iran was actually a good idea and that voters just weren’t patient enough to see the benefits. But it was Jesse Watters who took things to a strange place when he urged voters to see Donald Trump as their wife.
Speaking during the election night coverage as the results came in, Watters initially put on a brave face. He described the Democrat surge as a “three-foot wave that’s going to knock out a few sandcastles” and dismissed the “Democratic narrative that this thing is going to sweep the nation does not exist.”
Not a great prediction
As the results soon proved, it did exist. Democrats won victories across the nation, with the highlights being the victories of Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan and James Talarico in Texas. But Watters was sure “the red wall is forming, older voters are showing up to vote against socialism, youth and Hispanic voters are not showing up.” The red wall did not form.
But it was his next comment that truly raised eyebrows. Staring down the barrel of the camera, Watters explained, “Trump is like your wife. On some days you don’t really like him too much. But you always love him.” He continued, “And that’s what this is all about, there’s love there.”
If Watters wants to think of Trump as his wife he’s perfectly welcome to, though it’s safe to say this isn’t a sentiment shared by regular Americans. As of writing, Trump’s current approval rating sits at just 38.3% (per Natesilver.net) with a disapproval rating of 59%. On a more granular level, just 21% of Americans say they “strongly approve” of Trump.
If there’s a faint silver lining for the White House, it’s that Trump’s approval ratings have been worse. He recently collapsed to an all-time low of 36.3% approval, so he’s rebounded a little bit. Even so, combining those approval figures and the midterm results, it feels like America’s love affair with Donald Trump may finally, after all these years, be coming to an end.
Watters wrapped up his video by explaining that in Texas, the “Paxton team feels confident” that they will overcome strong early indications that Talarico would triumph. Paxton would go on to lose by around 800,000 votes.
