He had a rousing career in the American far-right and advocated for aggressive immigration enforcement – ICE just deported him

British far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has just been deported back to the United Kingdom, one day after his arrest. It is a significant turn for the controversial figure who spent years advocating for strict immigration enforcement in the United States. The deportation process concluded on Friday, after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained him at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

According to Reuters, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed the deportation on Saturday. Yiannopoulos, 41, was taken into custody on Thursday at the airport in Louisiana. According to federal officials, he had entered the country legally back in May 2019 but failed to maintain his legal status. A spokesperson for the DHS stated, “He chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws.”

Per the outlet, an immigration judge issued a final order of removal on July 22 due to his failure to appear at a scheduled immigration hearing. Yiannopoulos has been a prominent and vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, especially regarding immigration policies. The situation is particularly ironic given his long-standing public calls for much harsher immigration enforcement than what the current administration has implemented.

Seven years of controversy and trolling

The Washington Post highlighted that Yiannopoulos has long been a polarizing champion of conservative causes. He first rose to national prominence in the early 2010s as a writer for the conservative website Breitbart News. His career was marked by provocative stances on feminism, Islam, and immigration. 

In 2017, however, his influence reportedly waned after he resigned from Breitbart because a video surfaced in which he appeared to condone pedophilia. While he later apologized and claimed he was a victim of sexual assault as a minor, his public standing shifted drastically.

Per the outlet, Yiannopoulos was most recently employed by Kanye West as a spokesperson. The musician had performed in New Orleans on Friday evening. This is not the first time Yiannopoulos has been involved in high-profile political campaigns, as he previously served as a staffer for former U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene and managed the short-lived 2024 presidential campaign for Ye.

The deportation has also brought renewed attention to his online rhetoric. On X, he frequently posted aggressive demands for the removal of undocumented individuals. Per Reuters, in a June 2025 post, he wrote, “We have got to deport millions and millions and millions of people. Without that, nothing else matters.” 

In another post last year, the Post noted that he wrote, “Zero immigration for the next 20 years. No ifs, no buts.” One person whose immigration journey ended was the wife of a Trump supporter. All because of one bad check.

Per Reuters, he even proposed implementing ICE checkpoints at supermarket entrances and gas stations, and advocated for summary deportation for anyone unable to immediately prove their legal residency. According to CNN, in September 2025, he further suggested that ICE agents should receive “total legal immunity” while on duty. 

Interestingly, he isn’t the only far-right influencer to get detained. Earlier this year, a Brazilian influencer who insisted ICE only arrested criminals was nabbed.

According to The Washington Post, far-right conservative activist Laura Loomer took to X to celebrate his arrest. The outlet noted that the two personalities have been involved in a long-standing public dispute. In her post, Loomer wrote, “I was the first person to report on the fact that Milo was in the US illegally where he incited violence against President Trump and worked for Marjorie Traitor Greene.”

Yiannopoulos has reportedly had a career filled with controversy. During the height of his career in 2017, Yiannopoulos embarked on what he termed his “Troll Academy Tour” at various college campuses. These events often spiraled into chaos, with clashes between protesters and supporters, as students accused him of promoting hate speech. At the time, Buzzfeed reported on his connections to self-proclaimed white nationalists, further fueling the fire around his brand.

CNN noted that Yiannopoulos had previously claimed to be in the United States on an O-1 visa, which is designated for individuals with “extraordinary ability.” Despite his history of public speaking and employment across the country since at least 2015, the specifics of his legal status in the years leading up to his 2019 entry remain unclear to the public. 

The outlet noted that following the backlash in 2017, his media presence was significantly curtailed as he lost book deals and speaking invitations. In recent years, he also publicly renounced his previous identity as a gay man, moving toward a more socially conservative stance that included opening a clinic in Florida aimed at men struggling with same-sex attraction.

The Department of Homeland Security confirmed he was successfully returned to the United Kingdom on Friday.
