‘He is going to kill us!’ MAGA-mad Republican State Rep convicted of trying to gouge out wife’s eye, running daughter’s car off the road

No jail time, gives apology saying he'll do better.

Oklahoma State Representative Ty Burns is about as MAGA as it gets. The Republican is in lockstep with all things Donald Trump, joining in enthusiastically with the 2020 campaign falsely alleging Democrats stole the election and attempting to overturn the result.

Cut to 2025 and Burns is resigning in utter disgrace after several truly shocking incidents of violence against his family. According to recent court filings, an incident occurred over Thanksgiving 2024, after his wife “made plans to do something with friends and Ty got mad at her.” Burns became furious at her making plans without him and, according to the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation:

“[She] told Ty he was too controlling, and that she was going. Ty followed [his wife] into the bathroom. Ty was pointing at [her] and then forcefully tried to gouge her eye out with his finger. Ty broke a blood vessel in [her] eye. As a result of her eye injury, [she] could not go to work the whole next week. [The family friend] confirmed having seen [her friend] with injury to her eye.”

In two separate incidents, Burns also tried to run both his wife and his 16-year-old daughter off the road while driving. One saw him pursue his wife and her friend in a crazed attempt “to run a vehicle that [the friend] was driving off the road and striking said vehicle with his hands while screaming and making threats of violence.”

The other saw him chasing his 16-year-old daughter and her friend in his pickup truck. Video shows them saying: “He is literally following us in the truck, he is chasing us, he is literally about to kill us. … Oh my god this is scary.”

No jail time for Burns

Faced with incontrovertible evidence, Burns pled guilty, but wasn’t given any jail time. He received a one-year suspended sentence and had to complete a mandatory “batterer’s intervention program”.

Burns is blaming PTSD he suffered in the military for his actions and has resigned from office, releasing a statement saying:

“I take full responsibility for my actions, and I am getting counseling with my family. Although not an excuse for my actions, I am receiving intensive treatment for issues from my military service that I have long ignored as a problem. I am confident this will make me a better husband and father.”

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt sounds relieved he won’t have to deal with him anymore, putting out his own statement saying, “Domestic violence leaves lasting scars on families and it can’t be minimized or overlooked. Rep. Burns’ decision to step down is the right one for his family, constituents, and the Legislature.”

Absolutely right, though it’s horrifying that a man like this could be placed into a position of power at all. Here’s hoping his family gets the support they need to keep themselves safe from him in future.
