Hegseth warns ‘war is hell’ as six US troops die in Iran. Then an American ally shoots down three US fighter jets

Absolute chaos.

Six US service members have been killed in the ongoing conflict with Iran, and three American fighter jets were mistakenly shot down by an allied country. President Trump has already warned that more casualties are expected before the operation comes to an end.

US Central Command confirmed that the remains of two service members were recovered from a facility struck during Iran’s initial attacks in the region. These two deaths had not been previously reported or accounted for. Three other US service members were confirmed dead a day earlier, on Sunday.

According to Axios, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed the losses during a Monday briefing, echoing the president’s warning about further casualties. “As the president warned, an effort of this scope will include casualties,” Hegseth said. He added, “War is hell and always will be.”

Friendly fire in a crowded airspace was always a serious risk in this conflict

US Central Command also confirmed on Monday that three US fighter jets, flying in support of Operation Epic Fury, were mistakenly shot down by Kuwaiti air defenses on Sunday night. Hegseth had earlier described Operation Epic Fury as the most lethal strike in history, praising Trump for taking action against Iran. All six aircrew members ejected safely and are currently reported to be in stable condition.

The incident reflects how chaotic the air situation has become over the region. American jets and allied air defense systems are operating in the same airspace at the same time, with Iranian missiles and drones incoming, making the risk of these kinds of mistakes extremely high. When both sides are reacting at speed, errors become very hard to avoid.

Kuwait, which has acknowledged the incident, is among several Gulf states that have faced Iranian retaliation since US-Israel strikes began on Saturday. Missiles and drones have struck areas near Kuwait’s international airport and US military facilities in the country.

With Kuwaiti forces actively defending their territory against incoming Iranian attacks, their air defenses were on high alert, which directly led to the accidental downing of the US jets flying through that same airspace.

Hegseth has also been facing criticism on other fronts, with one senator accusing Hegseth of pushing an authoritarian AI agenda in a separate controversy back home. The US military is now managing both confirmed combat losses and a friendly fire incident as the conflict with Iran continues to escalate rapidly.
