‘Highly provocative’: Trump orders two nuclear subs deployed over social media spat with world leader no longer in office

Disturbing.

President Trump announced in an August 1 Truth Social post that he ordered two nuclear submarines to be deployed to “appropriate regions” over social media comments from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, current Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.

Trump: “Words are very important”

Trump wrote in his post, “Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that.”

Trump added, “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

What Medvedev said

On Monday, Medvedev criticized Trump’s ultimatum to Russia over Ukraine, calling it a “game of ultimatums.” Also on social media, Trump earlier demanded Russia agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine “10 days from today,” meaning from the date of the post, or face tariffs.

In response, Medvedev wrote on X, in English: “Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10… He should remember 2 things: 1. Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road!” referring to Trump’s nickname for former President Biden.

In follow‑up posts on Telegram and X, Medvedev warned Trump’s rhetoric risked confrontation with Russia’s nuclear strike capabilities, referencing Cold War-era systems like the “Dead Hand,” and mocked Trump’s threats as reckless escalation.

Trump Russia tensions escalate

Meanwhile, before the sub post, Trump lashed out at Russia on Truth Social, writing, “I have just been informed that almost 20,000 Russian soldiers died this month in the ridiculous War with Ukraine. Russia has lost 112,500 soldiers since the beginning of the year. That is a lot of unnecessary DEATH!”

Trump added, “Ukraine, however, has also suffered greatly. They have lost approximately 8,000 soldiers since January 1, 2025, and that number does not include their missing. Ukraine has also lost civilians, but in smaller numbers, as Russian rockets crash into Kyiv, and other Ukrainian locales.”

Trump’s post concluded, “This is a War that should have never happened — This is Biden’s War, not TRUMP’s.’ I’m just here to see if I can stop it!”

As for Russian President Vladimir Putin, he seems unmoved by Trump’s threats, reportedly telling reporters, “We need a lasting and stable peace on solid foundations that would satisfy both Russia and Ukraine, and would ensure the security of both countries,” according to The Guardian.
