Adam Kinzinger, the former Republican congressman turned outspoken Trump critic, just lobbed a verbal grenade at the president.
Responding to Donald Trump’s threat to invoke the Insurrection Act over escalating protests in Minneapolis, Kinzinger unleashed a brutally blunt statement: “Guess what @POTUS? You’re gonna lose. I guarantee it.”
Trump’s comments came as tensions in Minneapolis reached a boiling point. Protests have erupted across the city following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by ICE officer Jonathan Ross earlier this month. The public outrage has only grown after another federal officer shot a man in the leg during a traffic stop just days ago.
Instead of addressing the root causes of the unrest—like the public’s anger over ICE’s excessive force—Trump doubled down on his usual playbook: threats and bravado. On Truth Social, Trump warned that if Minnesota’s “corrupt politicians” couldn’t control the protests, he’d invoke the Insurrection Act to send federal forces in and “quickly put an end to the travesty.”
For those unfamiliar, the Insurrection Act is a centuries-old law that allows the president to deploy federal troops within the United States to suppress civil disorder, insurrection, or rebellion. Historically, it’s been used sparingly and only in extreme circumstances, like enforcing desegregation in the South during the Civil Rights Movement. But Trump has flirted with using it before—most notably during the George Floyd protests in 2020—making it less a measure of last resort and more a political cudgel to flex federal power.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that discussions about invoking the Act were underway, telling reporters, “He certainly has the constitutional authority to utilize that.” Meanwhile, House Speaker Mike Johnson chimed in with his support, blaming Minnesota’s local leaders for “encouraging violence” and aligning with Trump’s characterization of the protesters as “professional agitators and insurrectionists.”
