‘I know how this love story ends’: Gavin Newsom warns Mamdani about Trump’s inevitable betrayal

Newsom pulls from his own tumultuous relationship with Trump to caution Mamdani.

California Governor Gavin Newsom recently gave a friendly but firm warning to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, suggesting that his surprisingly amicable relationship with President Donald Trump might not end the way Mamdani hopes. It was a simple sentence, “ I know how this love story ends, Zohran.” Newsom expressed his concerns during an event in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where he was promoting his new memoir.

Newsom’s cautionary words stem from his own past dealings with Trump. Per Politico, after Trump’s second election, Newsom initially adopted an “open hand, not a closed fist” approach, even famously embracing the president following devastating wildfires in Los Angeles early last year.

That cooperative stance, however,  shifted dramatically after the Trump administration unleashed a barrage of lawsuits, immigration raids, and funding cuts targeting California. Newsom then concluded that Trump only truly respects displays of strength. Since then, Newsom’s relationship with Trump has spiraled, causing him to speak against the president at Davos and even use AI videos to make a point.

Newsom’s relationship with Trump also seems to have started well

The governor shared a personal anecdote from his earlier interactions with Trump, recalling a time when the president gave him a tour of Air Force One, including its bedroom. Jack Cocchiarella, a Gen Z liberal influencer who was interviewing Newsom on stage, humorously quipped that Trump “has got a crush” on both Newsom and Mamdani. Newsom chuckled at the remark.

“I’ve got to talk to Zohran,” Newsom said on stage, adding a direct message to the New York mayor. “I know how this love story ends, Zohran.” His comments were brief and offhand, but they clearly highlighted his current perspective on engaging with Trump.

In contrast to Newsom’s evolved stance, Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist mayor of New York, seems to have won Trump over, at least for now. The two have held several friendly meetings in the Oval Office. Just last week, Mamdani even presented Trump with fake newspaper front pages that prominently featured the president’s last name, a clever tactic to encourage his support for new housing construction initiatives.

Trump has openly praised Mamdani following these interactions. After one particularly friendly Oval Office meeting in November, Trump remarked, “I think this mayor is going to be doing some things that are really great.”

Newsom and Mamdani first connected on the day of Mamdani’s election last fall, establishing a line of communication that now includes this public warning from the California governor. Clearly, Newsom wants to share his hard-won experience with the younger mayor, hoping to prevent Mamdani from facing similar challenges down the line.
