If the presidency requires memory or basic awareness of one’s own statements, Donald Trump has just disqualified himself on camera. On Saturday, he enthusiastically endorsed a Texas Senate candidate. On Sunday, his candidate lost and he claimed he had nothing to do with the race. In fact, he hadn’t even heard about it.
On Truth Social, Trump issued a formal endorsement of Republican Leigh Wambsganss on Jan. 30, 2026, for the Texas State Senate in the suburbs of Fort Worth. In that post, Trump called Wambsganss a “GREAT Candidate” and said she had his “Complete and Total Endorsement.”
Less than 24 hours later, on Jan. 31, Trump followed up with another Truth Social post urging voters in Texas’ 9th State Senate District to “GET OUT AND VOTE” for Wambsganss. He again emphasized his “Complete and Total Endorsement,” and praised her as a “phenomenal candidate.”
He even invoked his “very good friend,” Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, to stress the importance of keeping the district Republican. The post also included polling information and a campaign website link.
But the next day, on Feb. 1, Trump was asked about that same Texas race after a Democrat defeated Wambsganss. And guess what? He had no clue about the election.
From “Texas, vote for her” to “who is she”?
The election took place in the same district that Trump had previously carried by 17 points. But when a reporter mentioned the a democrat defeated his endorsed candidate, Trump responded,
“I don’t know. I did not hear about it.”
The reporter pressed and told him was the 9th Texas State Senate District. But Trump again replied carelessly. He claimed, “I am not involved in that” and dismissed it as “a local Texas race.” Even after being reminded of the result, Trump insisted, “No, I did not know anything about it. I have nothing to do with it.”
So, Trump’s brain just deleted his own public statements from the day before. But before he could be reminded or confronted with his posts, Trump pivoted. He claimed the country now has “the lowest crime it has had in the last 125 years,” and warned that Democrats will bring back “open borders” and crime.
Trump also emphasized that he was not on the ballot and repeated that he had no involvement in the race. At no point did he even look remotely aware of his repeated Truth Social posts urging Texas to elect Wambsganss. Is his memory gone or is he lying? Because one has to be true to explain his contradiction.
Is Trump sun downing or just lying?
On Jan. 30 and 31, Trump portrayed himself as deeply involved. He named the candidate, the district, rallied voters, even invoked state leadership, and attached his personal brand to the outcome. But just 24 hours later, he claimed ignorance, distance, and non-involvement. Some X users suggested “selective dementia.”
One also questioned whether Trump actually controls his own Truth Social account. Because if he doesn’t, that could be another explanation. But the way his posts sound, it’s unlikely. So, others framed it more bluntly: either he lied, or he couldn’t remember. And we’re not sure which one is worse.
Trump has offered no clarification. He has not disavowed the endorsements or deleted the posts. But someone needs to explain, how did a race he promoted twice within two days became something he “did not know anything about.
