Marco Rubio declares America and Europe are ‘bound to one another’ then immediately rips apart the entire foundation

It’s a tough job to try to clean up after Trump.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a fascinatingly contradictory message at the annual Munich Security Conference. He declared that the United States and Europe “belong together” while simultaneously ripping apart the very economic and political foundations that define the modern Western alliance.

Though he aimed to unify the Western alliance, Rubio used his keynote address to condemn several hallmarks of globalization, per the Washington Post. He staunchly criticized open borders, mass migration, unfettered free trade, and what he called “deindustrialization.” Rubio showed similar disdain for policies designed to reduce carbon emissions and lauded unilateral U.S. military actions in the Middle East and Latin America.

Rubio also pushed back against organizations many Europeans view as essential, like the United Nations, which is typically seen as critical to protecting smaller states’ sovereignty. He flatly asserted, “On the most pressing matters before us, [the U.N.] has no answers and has played virtually no role.”

It looks like Rubio has come in to play Good Cop to Trump’s Bad Cop

Despite those hard-line positions, Rubio framed his overall message as an appeal to shared history and culture. He stated, “We are bound to one another by the deepest bonds that nations could share, forged by centuries of shared history, Christian faith, culture, heritage, language, ancestry, and the sacrifices our forefathers made together.” He added that, “Our home may be in the Western Hemisphere, but we will always be a child of Europe.”

European leaders, who have been deeply distressed by divisions stoked by President Trump’s punitive tariffs, territorial ambitions for Greenland, and disagreements over the war in Ukraine, made up a somewhat demoralized audience. However, Rubio’s appeal was viewed as more constructive than Vice President JD Vance’s seeming contempt for Europe last year. Event moderator Wolfgang Ischinger called Rubio’s remarks a message of “partnership.”

The conference wasn’t just about listening to the U.S. European leaders used the opportunity to proclaim the need to overhaul the post-World War II relationship, which traditionally guaranteed their security and spurred economic prosperity. They promised to chart a new course that makes them less dependent on the United States. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen spoke early Saturday, receiving applause when she declared, “In today’s fractured world, Europe must become more independent; there is no other choice.”

One way Europeans have committed to this is by increasing Security Funding to take charge of their own defence and stand up to Washington. French President Emmanuel Macron addressed this shifting dynamic Friday night, calling for “derisking vis-à-vis all the big powers,” covering not just defense but also technology and the economy. He added that while “Europe is rearming, but we must now go beyond,” because “Europe has to learn to become a geopolitical power.”

It is clear that Europe has lost faith in the US as an ally and is looking to create more autonomy to prevent a repeat of what has been happening since the start of Trump’s second term.
