MTG says she’d never run for president, but her explanation is less ‘relief’ and more ‘red flag’

Power comes with impossible strings attached.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has finally ended the rumors by saying clearly that she is definitely not running for president. This announcement came after she said she will resign from Congress early next year. According to Fox News, the Georgia Republican used a long post on X to reject the idea of running for the White House this past Sunday.

Greene said that she is “not running for President and never said I wanted to and have only laughed about it when anyone would mention it.” This strong denial comes right as she gets ready to step down from her current job in the House. This isn’t just a simple “no,” though. Greene’s post was also a direct response to reporting from Time Magazine, which had said she privately told people she was thinking about a 2028 presidential run.

The magazine mentioned two people who spoke with Greene about the possibility and three other people who knew about the lawmaker’s thinking. Greene didn’t hold back about that report, saying that the claim was “a complete lie” made up because they couldn’t “even quote the names of the people who they claim said it.” She called that practice lying, not journalism.

The presidency looks like a trap nobody should want

While denying the run, Greene gave us an interesting, if somewhat dark, look at why she believes the job is impossible to do correctly. She explained exactly what the presidential trail demands, and honestly, it sounds terrible. You’re talking about traveling across the country all the time, “begging for donations all day everyday to raise hundreds of millions of dollars,” and having to argue political talking points until you’re completely exhausted.

She thinks the process totally destroys your health and leaves you with “no personal life.” That’s a harsh assessment of public service, but the real kicker is what she thinks happens after you win. Greene believes the entire system is set up to fail. She explained that the whole reason she’d “never do it” is because even after going through all that misery, she would be “totally blocked from truly fixing anything.”

This is a seriously dark view of Washington, suggesting the presidency is basically a powerless title designed to soak up political energy without delivering real change. She went further, saying that to get the position, you have to make “deals that must be made in order to be allowed to have the title.” Greene says she is not interested in power or titles. If she’s right, it means the entire “Political Industrial Complex” has rigged the game.

She argues that this system “will never allow someone like me or you to rise to power and actually solve the crises that plague all of us.” That, she says, would go against the system’s “business model.” It’s a strong argument, even if you disagree with her politics. During recent tensions, Trump even dismissed Greene’s concerns about threats against her safety.

It’s important to remember that this powerful statement and her announcement of resignation come after a very public and heated fight with President Trump. The president had been attacking the congresswoman on social media in the time leading up to her decision to step down.

In fact, President Trump said he “refused to return” her “barrage of phone calls” during the conflict, noting that he “disagreed with her philosophy.” Greene had previously called the president’s attacks “a dog whistle to dangerous radicals.” Interestingly, some observers noted how Trump’s base reacted differently than expected during this conflict. Despite the harsh words, Trump later softened his position, saying he’d “love to see” her return to politics someday.
