Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem seemed to forget her own job when she noted the government can’t be trusted in an interview with CNN‘s Dana Bash.
The exchange from CNN’s State of the Union, which originally aired in 2025, resurfaced and went viral again in January 2026, amid recent controversy surrounding Noem and her handling of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions.
“You are the government.”
Noem told Bash that “we can’t trust our government anymore,” immediately prompting pushback from the CNN anchor. “You are the government,” Bash replied. Noem did not walk the comment back. Instead, she responded, “Yes, that’s what I’m saying.”
Noem’s comments were an extraordinary contradiction from a Cabinet secretary tasked with overseeing federal law enforcement and border security. In response, many questioned how someone openly expressing distrust in government could credibly lead a major federal agency.
“She really said the quiet part out loud,” one commenter wrote. Another was less charitable, quipping, “Girl, you are one turnip short of a veg box.” A third reaction to the widely shared video asked, “How in God’s name did this woman get a position in your government?”
Noem’s ICE controversy
The resurfaced CNN exchange comes at a politically sensitive moment for Noem. The DHS secretary has been facing intense scrutiny over her public defense of ICE following a fatal shooting during a federal immigration operation in Minneapolis earlier this month.
In that incident, an ICE agent shot and killed a woman during an enforcement action, causing protests, vigils, and clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement.
Noem has repeatedly defended the agent’s actions, characterizing the events leading up to the shooting as dangerous and framing the operation as a necessary enforcement effort.
Noem said, “It was an act of domestic terrorism. What happened was our ICE officers were out on an enforcement action. They got stuck in the snow because of the adverse weather that is in Minneapolis.”
According to Noem, “They were attempting to push out their vehicle, and a woman attacked them and those surrounding them and attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle.” This characterization is not supported by video footage.
Local officials and civil rights advocates disputed the federal government’s description of the encounter and called for greater transparency and independent oversight. Minneapolis officials have publicly questioned why state investigators were initially excluded from the investigation, escalating tensions between federal authorities and local leaders.
With the CNN clip viral again, critics argue that a senior official is expressing skepticism about government trustworthiness while simultaneously asking the public to accept DHS and ICE accounts of controversial enforcement actions.
Supporters of Noem and the Trump administration have pushed back, arguing that her comments reflect frustration with entrenched bureaucracy rather than a rejection of her own role. They say the DHS secretary has been clear about backing frontline agents and enforcing federal law, particularly on immigration, an issue central to the administration’s agenda.
