On December 31, Donald Trump rang in the new year with a bitter curse. In a post supporting convicted felon Tina Peters, Trump turned her conviction into a grievance sermon against Colorado officials. Take notes, MAGA governance now means wishing for people to go to hell.
The president targeted Colorado Governor Jared Polis and Mesa County’s Republican district attorney, Dan Rubinstein, in his Dec. 31 Truth Social post. The trigger was Tina Peters, the former Mesa County clerk, convicted in Colorado state court on seven charges. This includes four felonies after she helped facilitate unauthorized access to voting equipment data to an outside individual in 2021.
Writing “God Bless Tina Peters,” Trump went on a long rant about how her conviction was unlawful. According to him, she was only “trying to stop the massive voter fraud that goes on in her state.” But a jury weighed the evidence, and a judge imposed a nine-year sentence on her for the exact opposite cause. Those legal facts matter, even if Trump keeps pretending they don’t.
Tina Peters was convicted for her role in orchestrating a breach of her own county’s election systems. But Trump wishes that Polis and Rubinstein “rot in hell” for the crime of enforcing state law and putting Peters in prison. He wrote:
To the Scumbag Governor, and the disgusting “Republican” (RINO!) DA, who did this to her (nothing happens to the Dems and their phony Mail In Ballot System that makes it impossible for a Republican to win an otherwise very winnable State!), I wish them only the worst. May they rot in Hell.
A few weeks ago, on Dec. 11, Trump announced a “full pardon” to Tina Peters after her repeated requests (via ABC News). Thinking he has divine authority, the president wanted to turn a lawful conviction into proof of persecution. However, nobody told him that presidents cannot pardon state convictions.
But Colorado officials stood on that point and kept Peters in prison despite the constitutionally meaningless posturing by Trump. So butthurt Trump denounced Polis and Rubinstein as “scumbag” and “disgusting” in his post. In contrast, he portrayed Peters as a persecuted martyr and dismissed her crimes. But his “May they rot in Hell” is what boiled people.
Disappointedly, it’s coming from a president who brags about his Christian bona fides, staffs his White House with televangelists, and frames political disputes as holy war. It’s an odd catechism. As users on X sarcastically attacked him, writing, “His Christian ideals are shining through.”
Another added a reminder, “If you’re a Christian, read the Sermon on the Mount. It says clearly not to expect forgiveness if you can’t get past vengeance.” But we don’t even hope Trump would read that. He’s too far gone to be brought back, and so is Tina Peters.
