Pope Leo XIV has issued a “heartfelt appeal” for “moral responsibility,” urging an end to the current “spiral of violence” after recent strikes from the U.S. and Israel on Iran. This plea comes as tensions in the Middle East escalate dramatically, following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a series of devastating strikes across Iran over the weekend.
The first American pope expressed his “deep concern” about the tumultuous situation through a post on X. He made it clear that “stability and peace are not achieved through mutual threats, nor through the use of weapons, which sow destruction, suffering, and death.”
“Faced with the possibility of a tragedy of immense proportions, I make a heartfelt appeal to all the parties involved to assume the moral responsibility of halting the spiral of violence before it becomes an unbridgeable chasm.”
His impassioned statement called for diplomacy to step up and ensure the “well-being of peoples, who yearn for peaceful existence founded on justice.” He also asked everyone to keep praying for peace.
As a Christian leader, can he get through to Trump. I’m not holding my breath…
The situation in Iran has been escalating quickly as both sides stand their ground. The human cost has also been climbing quickly, with a US or Israeli strike decimating a school building, resulting in 153 casualties. There are also fears that Iran might call on its proxy groups to strike out, which will lead to a much larger war. When you consider this, the pope’s call really hits home.
Meanwhile, Trump has indicated that these strikes could potentially continue “throughout the week,” depending on how things develop on the ground. This isn’t a particularly calming thought, given the current instability. However, it seems par for the course, considering there doesn’t seem to be a reason for this conflict.
Back in Washington, lawmakers are pretty divided on the whole situation. You’ve got strong opposition from Democrats, which isn’t surprising, while most Republicans are throwing their support behind the strikes. It’s a clear partisan split on a really critical foreign policy issue.
Senator Lindsey Graham made his stance very clear during a Sunday appearance. He stated that it’s “in America’s interest to make sure that Iran can no longer be the largest state sponsor of terrorism.” He added, “We’re close. Once the people decide what they want to do next, I don’t mind helping them, but I know what they’re not going to be allowed to do next: Regenerate the largest state sponsor of terrorism.”
We’ll have to wait and see if diplomacy can truly regain its footing here.
