Senate Republicans just blocked a measure that would have stopped President Trump from continuing his offensive against Iran without congressional authorization. It is the second time since the conflict began that Republicans have shut down a Democratic attempt to limit the president’s power to use American military force without Congress signing off.
Per the New York Times, the vote came in at 53 to 47, sticking almost entirely to party lines. Every single Republican, with the notable exception of Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) voted against the measure. Paul is known for backing war powers resolutions, so his vote isn’t a huge surprise. On the flip side, one democrat, Senator John Fetterman (D-PA), supported the effort. It’s pretty rare to see that kind of bipartisan split, especially on something so critical.
Democrats have been relentlessly attempting to challenge Trump’s unilateral military moves, arguing that Congress absolutely needs a say in how American force is used abroad. These votes are also a strategic push to get top Trump administration officials to testify publicly about the ongoing conflict in Iran, since lawmakers have only received briefings in classified settings so far.

Congress didn’t even know that airstrikes were going to be launched against Iran. Since then, Democrats have been demanding more information. As minority leader, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY), said, “We do not know Trump’s goals. We do not know Trump’s timeline. We do not know what victory even looks like in his eyes. Enough is enough.”
Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) proposed this vote, passionately pointing to the human cost. “In the span of just two weeks, 13 U.S. service members have been killed and at least 200 of our American men and women have been injured,” he said. However, it seems the outcome was already determined, with Republicans showing no signs of shifting their support.
“This administration, amidst all of this, has failed to come before the United States and the American people for public hearings to make its case on the biggest military war engagement since the war in Afghanistan,” Booker stated.
Trump, during his State of the Union address just days before the military campaign, claimed that Iran was “working to build missiles that will soon reach the United States of America.” Je then justified the strikes, saying it was to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime.”
Critics, however, say that the administration hasn’t provided evidence of an imminent threat, something that was recently confirmed by intelligence officials. Plus, Trump officials have offered shifting explanations about what exactly prompted the actions, which only raises more questions about the legal basis for the conflict.
Republicans seem satisfied with the classified briefings on Iran. The Democrats, however, are emerging from them, arguing that not enough information is being shared and urging more details to be provided in public settings.
