So, Donald Trump replaced Kristi Noem, with no law degree, with a new Homeland Security Secretary who doesn’t even have a bachelor’s degree

Because what are required job qualifications when you have Trump's hand on your head.

President Trump has announced a significant cabinet change, tapping Oklahoma Senator Markwayne Mullin to become the next Secretary of Homeland Security, in place of Kristi Noem. It’s an interesting choice, as Mullin, a former undefeated professional MMA fighter, is also the only U.S. senator currently serving without a bachelor’s degree.

The president described Mullin as a “MAGA warrior” who will “work tirelessly to Keep our Border Secure, Stop Migrant Crime, Murderers, and other Criminals from illegally entering our Country, End the Scourge of Illegal Drugs and, MAKE AMERICA SAFE AGAIN.” Mullin has consistently defended Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and is expected to fully support Trump’s mass-deportation agenda.

Before entering politics, Mullin had a unique career path. Per Time Magazine, he left college before graduating, earning an Associate Degree in construction technology from Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology, to take over his family’s plumbing business when his father fell ill. He successfully expanded Mullin Plumbing and even hosted a home-improvement radio show, building significant private-sector wealth before running for Congress.

There are many competent people without a degree; the concerns go further

Mullin’s private-sector success propelled him into politics. He served ten years in the U.S. House of Representatives before becoming a junior senator from Oklahoma in 2023. As a member of the Cherokee Nation, he’s also the first Native American senator in two decades.

Mullin, however, is known for other incidents rather than his personal journey. He once challenged Teamsters president Sean O’Brien to a fight during a congressional hearing in 2023 after O’Brien posted critical comments about him on X. He also made waves during Trump’s State of the Union address by attempting to grab a sign from Democratic representative Al Green, who was engaged in a silent protest

Mullin has been a staunch ally of Trump, campaigning across battleground states. However, it’s worth noting that Mullin hasn’t served on either the House or Senate Homeland Security Committees during his time in Congress.

Kristi Noem’s initial ascension to Homeland Security secretary had raised some eyebrows in the first place. She hadn’t worked in the department and didn’t have a law enforcement background, which struck some as unusual for such a complex role. The Department of Homeland Security is massive, with only the Defense Department having more employees, and it oversees everything from FEMA and the Secret Service to cybersecurity.

Many outside allies believed Noem’s limited experience in immigration policy meant that the White House would handle that part of the job directly. Key Trump advisers, including his 2016 campaign chief Corey Lewandowski and incoming Border Czar Tom Homan, advocated for her nomination. Experts thoughts that Noem would focus her attention on the numerous other agencies within DHS as an “unofficial division of labor.”

That, however, never happened. With Mullin now at the helm, it seems Trump is doubling down on a leader who is fully aligned with his hard-line immigration stance and brings a different kind of “fight” to the role.
