This week Vice President JD Vance announced that $259 million in Medicaid funding in Minnesota would be halted as part of the Trump administration’s “war on fraud.” However, many can’t help but notice how this seems to be more of an act of punishment against the blue state with governor Tim Walz calling out the controversial move.
According to an article from The Guardian, the Trump administration intends to “temporarily halt” more than a quarter of a million dollars in Medicaid funding. Vance claimed that the action was being taken to ensure the state was “a good steward of the American people’s tax money.”
It comes after accusations of fraud were made regarding Somali day cares in Minneapolis. Vance explained that the government would be “stopping the federal payments… until the state government takes its obligations seriously to stop the fraud that’s being perpetrated against the American taxpayer.” However, the move will no doubt be a significant blow to the people of Minnesota that rely on Medicaid for their healthcare.
Tim Walz says there is no fraud
Of course, the fact that Minnesota is a blue state with a strong opposition to Trump seems to be more than just a coincidence in the eyes of many. Instead this seems like Republicans are intentionally punishing the people of the state, and the Democrat lawmakers who represent it, for opposing the administration.
Tim Walz denied the accusations of fraud stating, “this has nothing to do with fraud.” He claimed that Trump was withholding the medical funds “to punish blue states like Minnesota.” Walz also said that the agents sent to investigate “shooting protesters and arresting children,” while the DoJ “is gutting the US Attorney’s Office and crippling their ability to prosecute fraud.” He also pointed out the hypocrisy of Trump pardoning fraudsters every week.
Walz may have a point, it really doesn’t seem like the Trump administration is genuinely concerned with fraud and would rather use Medicaid funding to harm the citizens of a Democrat state. This is a monstrous way of abusing his power but unfortunately not something that’s beneath Trump. The president and his cabinet will use any and every resource to harm Democrats as much as they can, especially with the mid-terms being this year.
The administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Mehmet Oz stated that this was the first time the government had used Medicaid in such a way, “It’s unponderable that you would take advantage of these precious programs,” he said, before adding that other states would be next. How much should we bet they’ll all just so happen to be blue states?
