The disconnect inside Donald Trump’s White House has never been more glaring. While aides have spent weeks trying to deescalate and find an exit ramp for the president in Iran, the man has developed a habit of torching every diplomatic goodwill with a single Truth Social post.
Trump, whose first year in office has already been a nightmare, with one catastrophe after another threatening the safety and stability of the world — his Greenland ambitions, the methodical dismantling of the NATO alliance, the illegal war in Iran — unlocked new levels of unhinged this Sunday by threatening to blow up a country’s entire power grid and bridges.
After the fiasco of fighter jets being shot down over Iran, and a team of special forces having to swoop in to recover the crew, Trump took to Truth Social to exclaim that “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran.” Essentially threatening to destroy the livelihoods of 90 million people and potentially killing thousands reliant on hospital life support, water treatment, and other critical systems.
He then eyed his lowest moments in history, and decided to aim even lower, closing out the post with profanity. “Open the f—in’ strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in hell — JUST WATCH!”
I think the entire world is watching Trump. And so is the International Criminal Court. I don’t know if the president finds this whole situation amusing, or he’s flexing his wit, but ending his message with “Praise be to Allah” in this situation might not be the diplomatic masterstroke he was looking for.
According to a report by TODAY, Trump’s aides are still insisting that he wants to “wind down” the war, but turning this into an existential fight for Iran where they’ll have nothing to lose anymore might not be the best approach to that, especially when U.S. intelligence indicates the country still possesses half its missile launchers and thousands of drones.
Per Time, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles has grown alarmed that aides are feeding the president a “rose-colored view” of the conflict. Trump reportedly spends many mornings watching curated compilation videos of U.S. strikes — “stuff blowing up” as one official flatly put it — with limited visibility into battlefield losses.
Democratic Senator Chris Murphy blasted the president for his Sunday remarks, writing “If I were in Trump’s cabinet, I would spend Easter calling constitutional lawyers about the 25th Amendment.”
Unfortunately, a cabinet full of MAGA loyalists and yes-men would sooner invoke the Fifth than the 25th.
