Trump Doral returns to the PGA Tour after an 8-year absence with $20M tournament, as commissioner calls Trump the ‘facilitator’

Trump just scored golf's biggest comeback ever.

Trump National Doral will return to the PGA Tour schedule in 2026 after an eight-year break. The Miami resort owned by President Donald Trump will host a signature event called the Miami Championship with a $20 million purse. The tournament is set for April 30 to May 3, 2026, during the first weekend in May.

The golf course was dropped from the PGA Tour in 2016 after struggling to find a title sponsor following Trump’s purchase of the resort. The tournament moved to Mexico City that year, which led Trump to make a comment about kidnapping insurance. Since then, the course has been hosting LIV Golf events for the past four years, but that will end in 2026.

According to Fox News, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan has called President Trump “the facilitator” in ongoing talks between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf. Monahan said Trump’s involvement has made the prospect of reunification very real. The commissioner praised Trump as a lifelong golf fan who believes strongly in the game’s power and potential.

Trump’s role in golf’s potential reunification grows stronger

The Miami Championship will be one of nine signature events on the 2026 PGA Tour schedule. These events feature limited fields and $20 million purses, designed to attract the world’s best players. The tournament will fall during a busy six-week stretch that starts with the Masters and ends with the PGA Championship.

Trump has been actively involved in trying to bring the PGA Tour and LIV Golf together. He met with PGA Tour officials, including Monahan, Tiger Woods, and Adam Scott at the White House earlier this year. The president has said he believes the two tours should merge and that he could help make it happen quickly.

The return to Doral shows how relationships in professional golf have changed. While the PGA Tour distanced itself from Trump’s properties, his golf courses have remained central to major golf events. LIV Golf embraced Trump’s venues, staging tournaments at Doral for four straight years. His Trump National course near Washington D.C. will continue to host a LIV event in 2026 even as Doral switches back to the PGA Tour. The Miami Championship still needs a title sponsor, but its place on the schedule shows the PGA Tour’s commitment to featuring golf’s most iconic venues.
