Trump Secretary of Agriculture insists grocery prices will fall any day now, claims there’s ‘a golden age just right around the corner’

Please keep us updated on when this 'golden age' is going to start.

Donald Trump didn’t mince words about grocery prices during his campaign. In Sept. 2024 he explicitly promised: “Vote Trump, and your incomes will soar! Your net worth will skyrocket! Your energy costs and grocery prices will come tumbling down!”

Still banging that drum, he later emphasized that the days of draining your wallet to fill your cupboards would be over, saying: “When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on Day One.”

Anyone who’s stepped foot inside a supermarket recently may be able to detect that this hasn’t happened. The USDA forecasts that food-at-home prices will increase by 3.0 to 3.3 percent for the full year of 2025, with food inflation hitting 3.2% and continuing to rise for all products, with eggs, beef, and coffee prices hit particularly hard.

This has left the Trump administration in an awkward position, particularly as polls suggest that even hardcore MAGA is blaming Trump himself for their rapidly diminishing bank balances. But wait, what’s what? Bah gawd that’s Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins music!

Rollins appeared on Fox Business to say that, actually, everything is fine. And trust her that at some indeterminate point in the future, things will be even better!

“Eggs are down. Really everything is coming down. But listen, we’re not tone deaf. We know that a lot of Americans are like, ‘Well, we’re still not feeling the relief.’ The relief is coming. The structure is there. The One Big Beautiful Bill tax cuts go into effect. Costs are coming down. It really is a golden age just right around the corner. And I am SO excited and so grateful!”

Worryingly vague promises

Wow, sounds great Brooke! Can you give us a rough time frame on when this “golden age” will begin? Oh. Okay, so “right around the corner” is the best you can do. Oh well, we’ll be sure to enjoy it if/when it arrives.

I don’t want to be a Negative Nellie, but I can’t help but suspect there isn’t going to be a golden age at the end of the path Trump is leading us down. Or, if there is, it’s going to be a golden age for a handful of incredibly wealthy oligarchs fattening themselves up on public money while regular Americans starve to death.

But I’d be happy to be proved wrong. I guess only time will tell.
