Donald Trump hasn’t exactly been getting a lot of good press lately with the conflict in Iran and his newfound messiah complex. It’s safe to say the president’s PR team is working overtime to try and get a bit of good publicity for the trainwreck that is Donald J. Trump.
So what was their genius plan, you ask? Simple. Film the president ordering McDonald’s via an elderly DoorDasher while giving a lousy tip.
A recent publicity stunt shared online shows Trump getting McDonald’s delivered directly to the Oval Office by Sharon Simmons, also known online as the “DoorDash Grandma.” In the bizarre clip, which is quickly going viral online, the DoorDasher from Arkansas knocks on the door to the Oval Office as reporters stand outside. Moments later, the president opened the door to accept the delivery.
The pair greeted each other before discussing how Trump’s “no tax on tips” policy, which Trump had previously implemented in his “Big Beautiful Bill”, had helped Simmons massively. Simmons even told the president, “I saved over $11,000 by not having to claim.” All of this was well within earshot of the reporters who had been ushered outside, and he concluded her visit by handing her a $100 tip.
Another lame attempt to get good publicity for Trump
Anyone with a brain has already seen through this poorly-disguised publicity stunt, Trump himself even joked, “this doesn’t look staged,” so at least he’s self-aware enough to admit it. It was very obviously staged so that the press would see Sharon Simmons, who then went on to speak to reporters about how great the president is, focusing attention on the no tax on tips policy during a moment when the president is getting a lot of bad press.
This is all incredibly convenient timing. It comes as Donald Trump is facing an overwhelming tidal wave of bad press. Just this week, he saw many of his most devoted supporters turn on him after he shared an A.I. image depicting him as a Jesus-like figure, healing a man in a hospital bed. Trump claimed it was simply a depiction of him as a doctor.
Sharon Simmons, whose husband is battling cancer, is the perfect figure to help Trump perpetuate the doctor excuse, as the tax-free tips have allowed her to make money, work flexibly, and support her husband. By having Simmons flown all the way in from Arkansas to make a delivery in front of reporters, it seems Trump is trying to remind people that sometimes his policies do help people.
But what I want to know is why his tip was so lousy. If this whole thing was a staged publicity stunt, why not make yourself look even better with a truly generous tip? It seems even in staged events, the president still can’t fathom generosity or kindness.
