Former Senator Kyrsten Sinema is facing a major civil lawsuit. She’s accused of purposely breaking up a 14-year marriage with a member of her security team. The legal claim is called “alienation of affection,” which is very rare and not used often.
Heather Ammel filed the lawsuit in North Carolina. She claims the former Arizona lawmaker used deliberate and harmful interference to destroy her marriage to Matthew Ammel. The lawsuit says Sinema didn’t just have an affair but actively tried to break apart the marriage through suggestive behavior and explicit messages.
The complaint includes some shocking details. According to Unilad, Mrs. Ammel claims Sinema sent her husband sexually explicit and suggestive messages. In one exchange, Mr. Ammel suggested the couple have missionary sex with the lights on, and Sinema allegedly replied, “Boring!” This shows the kind of influence she supposedly had over him.
Sinema allegedly encouraged drug use and crossed professional boundaries
The allegations go further than just messages. The complaint claims Sinema encouraged Mr. Ammel to bring MDMA, also called ecstasy or molly, on work trips. She allegedly wanted to guide him through a psychedelic experience and even paid for psychedelic treatment for him separately. If true, this goes far beyond a normal office romance.
Matthew Ammel started working on Sinema’s security detail in April 2022. He had just retired from the US Army after multiple deployments overseas. He later moved from security to a paid position on her Senate staff as a defense and national security fellow. The professional relationship appears to have quickly turned personal.
Mrs. Ammel also claims the interference wasn’t just private. The lawsuit says Sinema became physically affectionate with Mr. Ammel during public events. She also allegedly gave him expensive gifts, including concert tickets, and took him on trips to places like Napa Valley and Las Vegas. This scandal adds to the controversy surrounding GOP senators facing Trump’s political demands in recent political news.
Heather Ammel, who has three children with her ex-husband, claims the relationship became so public that Mr. Ammel stopped wearing his wedding ring for “public optics.” He eventually admitted to the affair before filing for divorce. This happened after 14 years of marriage.
The lawsuit relies on the “alienation of affection” claim, which is an old law. Only a few US states, including North Carolina where the suit was filed, still recognize this law. It lets a spouse seek money damages from a third party accused of breaking up their marriage. To win, Mrs. Ammel must prove a loving marriage existed before Sinema’s interference, that the affection between spouses was destroyed by someone outside the marriage, that the third party’s actions were deliberate and harmful, and that these actions destroyed the emotional connection between husband and wife.
Mrs. Ammel is seeking more than $25,000 in damages, plus punitive damages and legal fees. Sinema’s attorney recently requested the lawsuit be moved from state court to federal court. The case emerges as senators accuse Trump of controversial actions that have dominated recent political headlines.
