‘Am I being unreasonable?’: Woman sparks fierce debate on TikTok as she argues she should pay less rent than her boyfriend as she earns less

The people of TikTok have offered their two cents.

A woman has found herself to be at the heart of a fierce debate after asking for the advice from the people on TikTok after she suggested to her boyfriend that he pay more rent than her as he earns more.

“Am I being unreasonable?” TikToker Keely asks her followers before going on to outline her situation. She explains that she and her boyfriend have been talking about moving in together. Of course, financial discussions are a must when it comes to planning such a big move as both parties need to be realistic about what they can contribute when it comes to rent, bills, and other expenses.

She says that they had already talked about how they would split expenses before, with the general plan to be to split it 50/50. However, this is where Keely loses a few people as she claims that plan never sat right with her. The reason being that she earns “way less than him,” therefore, she believes that it’s only fair that her boyfriend pays more than her as it won’t make as much of a difference to her than it would to him.

While she clarifies that she’s happy her boyfriend is “getting his bag,” she claims that she wouldn’t be saving much more than she is now should she move in with him. It would only be about $200 cheaper for her compared to her current situation in which she’s supporting herself and paying for everything.

However, her boyfriend wasn’t as open to the idea as Keely expected and so she turned to TikTok in the hopes she would get some impartial advice.

TikTok gives their thoughts

Keely is talking sense in many ways and plenty of people on TikTok agreed with her, “if the income isn’t equal, the division shouldn’t be the same,” wrote one viewer. To be honest, that probably is the simplest way of looking at it. However, others asked if she would be willing to pay more if the roles were reversed.

Some suggested Keely offer to do more chores while a few viewers asked why she even needed to live with him. It’s pretty normalized that people in a relationship move in with each other eventually, but considering they both seem to be able to financially support themselves, what’s the rush to shack up? Not all couples need to live together. Some viewers suggested that this disagreement between her and her boyfriend meant that they weren’t ready to move in together yet.

In a second video Keely told her followers that her boyfriend had apologized and come around to her idea of contributing based on income although the people of TikTok were still sceptical of his sudden turnaround.
