Austin woman arrives at Walgreens for her Wellbutrin prescription. Then she learns it was handed to someone else: ‘insane HIPAA Violation’

Gracie thought she was making a routine pharmacy run

A routine pharmacy pickup allegedly left one Austin woman without her Wellbutrin after she says Walgreens handed her prescription to someone else. The TikTok documenting the mix-up opens beneath the on-screen caption, “INSANE HIPAA VIOLATION HAPPENED TO ME.”

TikTok creator TravelNurseGracie says she went to her local Walgreens after getting a text notification that her prescription was ready.

“I went to Walgreens to pick up my script. I’m on Wellbutrin and I got a text saying my script was ready,” Gracie said in the clip. She says a pharmacy tech then told her there was no medication waiting for her.

Her prescription was already gone

According to Gracie, a pharmacy manager told her the prescription had already been picked up the day before, which she says she immediately denied. “I was like excuse me no I didn’t, like now I’m being accused of being drug seeking,” she said, explaining that she felt she was being treated as though she were trying to obtain medication she had already picked up. “It’s not like it’s oxycodone or Adderall like, like what, why are you accusing me of saying I picked them up.”

Gracie says the exchange left her feeling as though she was being treated with suspicion over a mistake she hadn’t made, a frustration another customer recently described after a medication mix-up led to her being treated like she was trying to obtain drugs.

Gracie says she pushed the manager to pull the surveillance footage, but felt the response came off as a challenge rather than an attempt to figure out what had happened. “She was like well do you want me to check the cameras, like threatening, like it, you’re gonna see me on there,” Gracie recalled. “I was like yes please, I would love for you to check the cameras.”

After what Gracie says was a 20-minute wait, staff came back with an explanation. A man driving a white Toyota pickup truck had apparently been given her prescription, and the manager suggested it may have been a mix-up.

“He’s like, oh well, it must have been like a look-alike and sound-alike situation,” Gracie said, questioning how that theory could hold up given the names involved. “I’m like, oh, the man’s name is Gracie, look-alike, sound-alike, like what.”

Beyond the mistaken handoff itself, Gracie says the bigger issue is what went out the door with her medication. She said whoever received the prescription would also have had access to the personal information attached to the package.

Walgreens couldn’t simply refill the medication because the system showed it as already sold, meaning she’d need a new prescription from her doctor before getting her Wellbutrin.

Gracie, who says she works as a nurse herself, stressed that she understands mistakes can happen. “I get mistakes happen, I’m a nurse, like I would be the last person to be like oh I wanna take action,” she said. “But I think it was just the way I was treated.”

Viewers had plenty to say about the alleged mix-up, with some raising concerns about both privacy and safety. “That’s not only a HIPAA issue it’s a HUGE safety issue,” one comment read.

Another commenter questioned what would happen to the insurance claim, writing, “they also billed your insurance so it’s fraudulent billing.” A third viewer said Gracie’s description of the interaction sounded familiar, writing, “Walgreens treats everyone like a drug seeker and they are always extremely condescending. I go to a local pharmacy now.”

For Gracie, the mistake itself was only part of the problem. She says she was treated as though she had done something wrong before staff checked the footage, much like another customer who said a receipt misunderstanding left her feeling accused of stealing.

Gracie says she’s still without her Wellbutrin and waiting to hear back from her doctor’s office. She also says her prescription, along with the personal information attached to it, was handed to someone else.
