A Brooklyn resident says she discovered something unexpected inside a bag of Trader Joe’s Hot Honey Popcorn and took to TikTok to share the issue, asking, “What would you do?”
She wrote, “Ugh the hot honey popcorn from Trader Joe’s has been my favorite for a few weeks, but today I opened a new bag from yesterday and to my horror… WTF is that?! Took it back to the store and the manager was horrified, offered whatever but clearly I’ll never be able to eat this again. Took my information and said quality control will contact me… honestly don’t even know how to feel.”
The mystery object has sparked plenty of speculation among viewers. One user suggested, “It looks like a shop towel (thick blue paper towel we use in industrial spaces).” Another viewer noted that at first glance, they thought a blue corn tortilla chip might have accidentally made it into the bag

Her situation is notable given the recent history of product concerns involving the grocery chain. According to NBC New York, in March, nearly 10 million pounds of popular frozen food items sold at Trader Joe’s and other retailers were subject to a massive recall. This recall was initiated by Ajinomoto Foods North America after customers reported finding pieces of glass in various products.
Federal officials identified a vegetable ingredient, specifically carrots, as the likely source of the contamination. The recall impacted items like Vegetable Fried Rice, Chicken Fried Rice, and Chicken Shu Mai, which were distributed across more than two dozen states. Additionally, in April, the FDA initiated a recall over metal shards found in bread and pizza at Trader Joe’s.
Trader Joe’s said, “nothing is more important than the health and safety of our customers and Crew Members.” They note that to ensure this goal, “We voluntarily take action quickly, aggressively investigating potential problems and removing the product from sale if there is any doubt about its safety or quality.” To match this, they openly showcase the items that have been recalled in the past.
Despite this promise, many TikTokers wrote of similar situations, reflecting a growing frustration among some shoppers regarding quality control. One user commented, “I stopped shopping there a long time ago because there are constant recalls on their products.” Another added, “Trader Joe’s had way too many recalls in the last year or 2.”
Others claimed they’d had their own negative experiences, with one person claiming, “Yea I found pebbles in my lentil soup. They have a QC issue. And their produce spoils abnormally fast.” In another case, a woman filed a lawsuit against the store claiming she found the tip of a glove and maybe a finger in her Trader Joe’s orange juice.
In response, someone who identified themselves as a former crew member explained that stores and managers take reports seriously. They wrote that if a bag is damaged, it typically doesn’t even make it to the shelf and claimed, “So this happened at the warehouse level, and there will most likely be a quality hold sent around to all stores to pull that specific snack item until it is resolved.”
Another user shared a positive experience with the company’s customer service. They wrote, “I found a hair in the almond danish and emailed them. They called me and asked questions and then sent me a gift card. They were very thorough! They will take care of it.” Not everyone has had such a smooth resolution, however. One user claimed, “Found a magnet in my husband’s yogurt from there and all they did was send us a 20$ voucher lol.”
NBC reported that the FDA classified the March 2026 glass contamination as a Class II recall. This means that while consumption could lead to temporary health consequences, the risk of serious injury remains remote.
