California parents build big walkway where their daughter can play safely. Then the building inspector shows up: ‘We won’t be bullied by anyone’

A California couple feel frustrated and persecuted after building a big walkway outside their house for their daughter to play, only for a building inspector to show up and tell them it wasn’t allowed. In a viral clip posted to TikTok, the inspector is seen delivering a “red tag” and accusing the couple of building a “third car driveway.” However, the parents say that it wasn’t intended for cars and claim that they are being targeted.

The video went viral on TikTok, receiving over 6 million views in just over a day. In her video, the poster, Leslie Diana, claimed in the in-video text that she was “excited to finally have my walkway done for my daughter to have a safe play area.” She showed the work done on the driveway, or walkway as she refers to it, which seems to go from the sidewalk all the way up her front yard to the house.

However, according to Leslie, three days later, a building inspector arrived at their front door to tell them that the alteration to their property was not allowed. Leslie shared footage captured from a Ring door cam in which the inspector can be heard telling her partner, “The concrete you have on the side is not allowed here; nobody else has it.”

Leslie says her family is not being heard

In the caption of the video, Leslie called the inspector’s claims a “complete joke,” adding that other houses nearby have “even more concrete or driveways that people actually park cars on.” In her video she showed other allegedly nearby properties that had big driveways. She also claimed that the concrete walkway was not intended for cars.

Leslie vowed that she and her partner would stand up for themselves, writing, “We won’t be bullied by anyone.” She claimed that her family’s complaints were “not being heard” and that they were “being laughed at by the girls in the city hall office.” 

Leslie also accused the inspector of being racist to her and her partner, although she did not elaborate on what exactly she meant by that, and her video doesn’t appear to present any instances of outward racism towards the family from the man.

Alleged racism aside, viewers were more shocked that the town or state was able to dictate what they were able to do on their own property. Some viewers recommended that Laslie and her partner look into the driveway codes for their local town and “sue the city.” However, another pointed out that “You’re not able to have a third car driveway in some cities.”
