A confrontation captured on video at a Jersey Mike’s restaurant in Chicago shows a woman arguing with employees over a requested birthday discount and threatening legal action when staff declined her request. The video, which X account Goofies of Chicago shared on July 13, 2026, has drawn thousands of views.
The caption said a woman who was never identified entered an unspecified Jersey Mike’s location, presumably in the Chicago area, and asked employees for a birthday discount. According to the post, staff told her they could not provide one, which led to a prolonged argument. The account also claimed the woman threatened to sue the restaurant after employees refused her request.
During the exchange, the woman repeatedly asked to speak with a manager and said she wanted to contact the company’s corporate office. At one point in the video, she can be heard saying, “Watch you lose your job, David. This is how I get treated on my birthday at Jersey Mike’s.”
Commenters sided with the employee
The incident, which has not been independently verified, prompted mixed reactions in the replies to Goofies of Chicago’s post. One commenter said they hoped Jersey Mike’s corporate office would support the employee.
They also argued that difficult customer interactions can test workers’ patience. They added that although the employee’s language could have been more professional, the customer handled the situation poorly. Jersey Mike’s has not publicly commented on the situation.
Meanwhile, another commenter wrote that customers generally cannot expect a free birthday sub unless they receive a birthday reward through the company’s program. They added that they themselves did not receive one after failing to meet the program’s purchase requirements.
Tagging Jersey Mike’s, another commenter added, ‘@jerseymikes do NOT punish this individual in any way. Support your people, they do NOT have to take this kind of abuse. He said what he said, she deserved it.”
According to Jersey Mike’s official MyMike’s rewards terms, the company offers birthday rewards for qualifying loyalty members. The offer is not a general in-store birthday discount available upon request.
Eligible MyMike’s members who opt in to marketing emails and enter their birthdays. They must also make at least one qualifying purchase during the designated time period.
Because the company’s birthday benefit operates through its rewards program, the video does not indicate whether the customer participated in the MyMike’s rewards program. It also doesn’t indicate whether the woman qualified for the offer or whether she requested a separate discretionary discount from employees.
