Chicago woman left stranded in Spain next to a Burger King by airline. But the nightmare didn’t end there

It is time to hound customer service.

It is a nightmare scenario for any traveler, and for Chicago-based wellness and travel enthusiast Maria Wiedeman, it became a reality when she was bumped from her flight by TAP Air Portugal. Wiedeman recently took to TikTok to share her ordeal.

In the clip, she first sets her phone down in a parking lot, stepping back to reveal her sensible travel attire while clutching a bag of Burger King takeout. Her face is visibly puffy from crying, and as she retrieves her phone to pan across the drab street and the fast-food outlet, the frustration is palpable. The video is set to the disco track Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel by The Tavares, a choice that only highlights the absurdity of her situation.

Wiedeman described her frustrating situation in the in-video text: “nothing beats TAP Air Portugal knowingly overbooking a flight and then making it the passenger’s problem.” She explained that she was forced to stand by for a fully booked flight, leaving her stuck in Spain at a 2-star hotel with no way to get home until the following day.

Getting stranded is everyone’s worst nightmare

Her brother, Cooper Wiedeman, even jumped into the comments, “@tapairportugal fix it now. Get my sister home. Or I’ll be calling you to make it right. NOT OK.” All of the commenters were incredibly sympathetic and horrified about the situation, with some giving practical advice. Ktambasco10 reminded Wiedeman to “make sure you get your compensation!! anywhere from 250€-600€ depending on the distance of the flight 💌💌💌”

Unfortunately, this situation is part of a broader, often messy reality of modern air travel. Per The Times, Airlines frequently overbook to create a reliable revenue stream since roughly 15% of passengers fail to show up for their flights. Carriers use statistical models to predict no-shows and sell those seats twice. When the math goes wrong, passengers get bumped. It is supposed to be voluntary, but Airlines often bump solo travelers or those with basic fare tickets.

TAP Air Portugal is a carrier with a reputation for these kinds of headaches. One passenger highlighted a pattern of red flags on Business Insider. They explained an unexplained flight schedule change and even had difficulties accessing promised refunds through their website. They were also bumped from their flight and were forced to rebook on other flights because TAP’s website wasn’t working and the airline’s customer service was unhelpful.

If you find yourself in a similar spot, it’s vital to know your rights. Under EU and UK regulations, if you are bumped from a flight taking off from or landing in these regions, the airline must offer you an alternative flight at the earliest opportunity. You are also entitled to support, including food vouchers and overnight accommodation if necessary. You can even choose a full refund within seven days if the alternative options don’t work for you.

To avoid these situations, experts often suggest booking directly with the airline rather than through third-party aggregators, as these platforms can sometimes leave you with less leverage when things go wrong. Choosing direct flights can also help you dodge the risk of being bumped on a connecting leg of a journey.

Checking in as early as possible and joining the airline’s frequent flyer program can also shift your status from a stranger to a preferred customer, which can sometimes provide a layer of protection.

For Maria Wiedeman, the reality of the situation was a 2-star hotel and a meal from a local Burger King. It’s a stark reminder that even when you do everything right, the airline industry’s preference for overbooking can turn your travel plans upside down in an instant. Then again, flying as a whole comes with a lot of frustrating elements.

Recently, a woman found herself put on a bus rather than the plane she paid for. Then again, being bumped or driven might still be better than suddenly being put on a no-fly list.
