‘Do not come in Monday’: Woman receives drunk text from boss saying she’s lost her job

Right before Christmas too.

Being fired from a job is never fun but a decent employer will, at the very least, let an employer go in a way that is respectful and professional. Then you have bosses that simply don’t care and let go of employees over text, which is exactly what happened to one woman on TikTok.

It’s important for managers to remember that employees are still human beings with feelings and factoring this into how they choose to dismiss the employee can make all the difference in the world. Unfortunately for Kristin McCarley, her boss decided not to bother with the formalities, instead he sent her a drunk text on a Saturday night simply telling her not to come in on Monday.

The text reads, “Do not come in Monday. I’ve mage changes to the office. I have to let you go.” That’s all her boss told her, no apology, very little in the way of an explanation, just a text telling her she no longer had a job. The typos and the time the message was sent (10:36pm) tell you all you need to know about the intoxicated state the boss was likely in.

Onwards and upwards

Honestly, with a boss like that, being fired may have been the best thing that could happen, being fired around Christmas time is rather cruel but Kristin calls it a “blessing in disguise,” clearly she’s not going to let it get her down.

Many commenters on TikTok advised that Kristin get herself a lawyer and take her boss to court over the unprofessional dismissal, “You about to get a Christmas blessing in the form of a lawsuit,” wrote one viewer. “What???? OMG! Getting fired over a drunk text. This can’t be legal,” added another.

However, it’s not clear whether her employer technically did anything illegal in firing her the way they did. One viewer shared a harsh truth as they explained “its not illegal for your boss to fire you via text message.”

Unfortunately, most states in the U.S. operate under “at-will” employment which, according to legal.thomsonreuters.com, means an employer can fire an employee at any time for any reason (unless it breaks a contract). That means Kristin likely won’t have any legal recourse over the matter regardless of how unprofessional and maybe even unfair her dismissal was.

In a second video Kristin explains that while she did get fired, she was not fired from her real estate brokerage. However, as a single mom she opted to take employment at this office where she worked for over a year before the text. When asked in the comments what happened after the text she claimed she simply went into the office on Monday to drop of the keys, her boss had apparently already blocked her number.
