A Georgia woman said she walked into a Walmart in Covington and saw a laptop on display with a distorted picture of a Black man. JSimone, who posts on TikTok as @drewmom1, shared a video of the moment that has gained more than 3,600 views.
In the TikTok video, she walks through the electronics section past rows of open display laptops. She stops at a black HP laptop and zooms in on the screen. The image on that screen showed former President Barack Obama with exaggeratedly large ears and missing front teeth, smiling broadly.
JSimone said in the video, “So I’m walking into the Covington. Really? This what we doing? They had us so bad. Like, what?” On-screen text in the clip read, “Really? The moment I want to shop in a Walmart!!!!!!Covington Georgia.”
Display laptop in Covington Walmart showed a doctored Obama photo
JSimone wrote in the caption of her TikTok video, “I can’t believe I just saw this. No matter how you feel about a person or whether you like them or not, racism is NEVER okay. There’s simply no excuse for it.” Such racial profiling incidents have been reported at Walmart stores across the country, like when a black man in Oklahoma was asked for his green card by a lady behind him.
The video shows an aisle lined with display laptops sitting on a black counter. Some screens showed operating system pages or product ads. Boxes of electronics sat on the floor under the counter. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about racial bias in customer service, as a New Mexico nail salon allegedly skipped a Black woman in line.
She keeps the camera on the HP laptop screen for several seconds before panning slightly to show more of the electronics display. She does not name any employee in the video or show anyone changing the screen.
The poster later added a comment update. She said the manager apologized and said it may have been a customer. She also wrote, “but either way… it’s 7 AM in the morning! Who is even doing this this early?! SMH”
Several people who watched the video left comments about the store and the city. One commenter pointed to the location and wrote, “u must’ve been at the one in the “City of Covington”.” Another person said they had been at that store the same day and planned to use a different location. They wrote, “I was there today I just told my daughter I’ll stick to my Salem rd Walmart by the house.” A third commenter simply wrote, “Oh wow that’s weird.”
One viewer described the image as coming from hate and wrote, “Just obsessed!! when people full of hate and hate themselves ..they become obsessed with people who they feel is better!” Someone else wrote, “People are so disgusting.” One commenter said the image was probably not the store’s doing and wrote, “It was probably someone bad little kid not Walmart fault.”
Another commenter warned people away from the city and described a separate incident. They wrote, “the city of covington avoid. They tried to kidnap my son who was working at captain ds right off 278 he was taking trash out a grey van pulls up a large burley man with an alabama cap got out and tried to grab him. called police they grinned the whole time while making report.”
