A TikTok video showing a woman casually approaching what her apartment complex had warned residents was an alligator has gone viral, racking up 4.7 million views. The clip was posted by TikToker Haylee, who goes by @hayleels on the platform. The footage captures her neighbor, identified only as Geraldine, walking toward the water’s edge while Haylee and another person film from a distance.
In the video, a male voice is heard asking, “She don’t see that damn gator beside her?” Haylee, presumably the female voice in the background, then says, “Is she crazy?” as Geraldine continues walking toward the object in the water. As Geraldine bends down toward it, Haylee is heard gasping while the male voice cries, “Oh s–t!”
Text overlaid on the video reads: “My apartment sent a message saying beware of the ‘gator.’ Geraldine standing on business.” What Geraldine pulls out of the water, however, turns out not to be an alligator at all, it appears to be a black bag. At that point, both Haylee and the male voice behind the camera burst into laughter.
Viewers flooded the comments after the video’s surprising twist ending
The reveal caught viewers off guard, and many took to the comments to share their reactions. “Her taking a picture first sent me,” one commenter wrote. Another suggested Geraldine may not have been as fearless as she appeared: “i think she took a picture she was in disbelief too.” A third commenter pointed to another detail in the video that drew laughs: “i love how the dog suddenly gained all the courage and immediately started talking shit.”
While this particular situation turned out to be a false alarm, alligator sightings in residential areas across the southern United States have been reported with increasing frequency in recent years, with the animals appearing in locations such as swimming pools, hiking trails, golf courses, and even gender reveal parties.
According to the Defenders of Wildlife, alligators were listed as endangered in the U.S. in the 1960s after more than a century of being overhunted for their hides and meat. Following protections granted under the Endangered Species Act, the species was able to recover and was removed from the Endangered Species list in 1987, according to the Endangered Species Coalition.
Another data shared by Fox Weather shows that around 5 million alligators are reported to live across southern U.S. states. Nine states, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas, allow alligator hunting, though many of those states’ hunting provisions are said to be highly regulated.
Alligator encounters in the region have at times turned dangerous, as seen in the case of a Louisiana man attacked by an alligator after jumping from an elevated interstate while fleeing a DWI stop.
Given the scale of the alligator population across the South, it is perhaps understandable why apartment management would issue a warning upon spotting something unusual near the water. In this case, however, what appeared to be an alligator was seemingly nothing more than a floating black bag, though the warning itself, and Geraldine’s response to it, was apparently enough to send the internet into stitches.
