Is there a Threads character limit?

How does Threads put its own spin on the Twitter formula?

After Twitter’s acquisition by billionaire Elon Musk, who had adopted a rash of controversial policies — such as making blue verification checkmarks a paid service, it isn’t surprising that the social media platform’s biggest rival, Meta (the company that owns Facebook), would come out with their own equivalent, called Threads. Even though Threads has a lot of similarities to Twitter, including being operated by a company with an arguably morally dubious background, the question remains whether it is straight-up identical but with just a few minor tweaks. For instance, does Threads implement the famous character limit for posts?

It may not entirely surprise you to know that while Threads does indeed have a character limit, it is not identical to that of Twitter. That’s understandable considering Meta’s new app is no doubt trying to set itself apart in some ways from its spiritual predecessor.

What is Threads’ character limit and what is Twitter’s character limit?

While Twitter’s character limit remains 280, according to the app’s developer platform, the rival social media site operated by fellow billionaire Mark Zuckerberg is nearly double that. Indeed, the character limit on Threads posts is 500, according to CNN

Other than that, Threads has a lot of similarities to Twitter, including being able to “reply to, repost, and quote others’ Threads posts,” CNN said. However, something unique about Threads that is not shared by Twitter is its integration into Instagram, also owned by Meta, with the app blending “Instagram’s existing aesthetic and navigation system, and offers the ability to share posts from Threads directly to Instagram Stories.”
