‘It’s not a glitch if it’s been happening for 2 years’: Walmart shoppers slam the retailer after machine tries to steal nearly $100

Walmart may be overcharging you.

When one Walmart shopper recently shared that a system “glitch” tried to tack nearly $100 onto her bill, it immediately triggered a flood of warnings from others who have noticed similar suspicious charges. This whole situation is wild, and it’s a terrifying reminder that you really have to be on your game when you’re checking out.

The shopper, known on TikTok as @nobrasallowed, posted about the “suspicious” incident that happened during a recent trip to the retailer. She said that her total was $108, which is a pretty standard grocery run nowadays, but when she inserted her card into the reader to pay, the machine displayed a completely different number: $193, per Daily Dot.

She immediately removed her card and realized something was wrong. She noted that the main register screen still showed the correct $108 total, but the card reader, which handles the actual payment, was demanding $90 more. A Walmart employee had to step in and move the transaction to an entirely different register to resolve the issue, and only then was she charged the correct amount.

Always double check the price and payment

Since she didn’t complete the transaction at the higher price, she admitted that she isn’t certain the card reader would have actually processed the extra $90, but she thought the whole thing was “really odd.” She felt compelled to warn others about the incident, urging people to “Be careful going through check out this year with things. It’s a little bit sketchy. Might have just been a glitch, but just something to be aware of.”

I think she’s right to call this out. When you’re dealing with a difference that huge, it definitely raises some eyebrows. What’s even more concerning than the initial incident is the reaction from other customers. Once the video went viral, shoppers flooded the comments section with their own experiences, suggesting this isn’t just a one-off error. It sounds like this kind of systematic error has been going on for quite a while.

Walmart felt a little fishy today. Maybe just a glitch. Be on the lookout and take extra care! #walmart #shopping #groceries #priceincrease

One commenter put it bluntly, saying, “It’s not a glitch if it’s been happening for 2 years.” That really makes you wonder if these are accidental errors or something more intentional. Other shoppers called the practice outright “THEFT,” lamenting the fact that people are forced to remain constantly vigilant just while taking care of basic needs. We already have to use tricks not to get scammed at mechanics, but now Walmart too?

One person described a recurring issue they experienced twice in a single week. They explained that when they scanned an item, the system automatically added the next size up of that item to the bill, along with the correct item they had just scanned. They only caught the error because they were checking their receipt and saw where the item had to be taken off. They added, “I have no idea, but if someone else was checking me out, I never would have noticed that. Feels pretty intentional to me!”

It’s awful that customers have to deal with this level of anxiety, but we’ve seen movers shake people down, so it’s hard to trust any company.
