‘It’s very important’: TikTok trend forces millions to confront their life choices and teaches the rest to say ‘yes’

Take the chance.

The newest craze sweeping TikTok is the “it’s very important” trend, which is forcing millions of users to look back at their life choices and reflect on the power of trusting their gut. This self-reflection movement is casting a serious spell over the platform, reminding you that sometimes the smallest, most seemingly inconsequential decisions can actually lead to the absolute best things life has to offer.

The format is specific, but it’s surprisingly easy to replicate, per Daily Dot. The template is simple: “In your 20s there will be a [blank]. It is very important that you [blank].” You then layer this text over a clip or several clips showing the action or, more commonly, the incredible results that action produced.

TikToker @catrionathomas garnered over 1.1 million views by sharing her incredible footage from the Dolomites in Italy, writing: “In your 20s someone will ask you to go to the dolomites. It is very important that you say yes.” Another popular example suggests that when “a friend will invite you for coffee,” it is “very important that you go get the coffee.” That simple coffee chat could change everything, and that’s a fantastic message.

What chance did you take that you may have regretted otherwise?

The most common theme we’re seeing is the power of saying “yes” to opportunities, even when you might want to bail or feel too busy. People are showing off the amazing outcomes of going on that date, applying for that dream job, or just accepting a casual invitation. For example, one video showcased the stunning results of travel.

It’s a great reminder that your instincts are often right, even when the moment feels small. I love this trend because it validates those moments when you just knew you had to do something, even if it felt insignificant at the time. The whole idea is that you never truly know which decisions will alter the entire course of your life, so you’ve got to follow your heart.

The trend really took off in November and has already inspired tens of thousands of videos across the platform. If you’ve been scrolling through the #inyour20s hashtag, which now holds over 43,900 posts, you’ve probably heard the signature soundtrack: a mashup of Billy Joel’s Piano Man and Fleetwood Mac’s Silver Springs.

Perhaps the most moving videos are those that highlight the importance of not listening to negativity or doubt. Rosie of @itsrosieandharry used the trend to share how important her partner, Harry, was in helping her through her struggle with psoriasis. This clearly shows that support systems are definitely “very important” for getting through tough times.

Regardless of your age, your decisions have many consequences. I wouldn’t say to do anything just because it will make money or because you think it will make you look cool. If you do what you want to do because it’s something you think is good or right, you’re going to end up looking back feeling as grateful as many do.
