‘Just to save a few dollars’: Man spotted driving down highway with something absolutely wild strapped to his roof

Physics and common sense left the chat.

A man driving on the highway noticed something strange. A Geo Prizm was cruising along with a huge stack of boxes piled on its roof. The sight caught attention because of how dangerous and unusual it looked.

According to Motor1, TikTok user Frank the Tank shared a video of this odd scene. The video quickly went viral on TikTok and has gotten over 1 million views. In the clip, the Prizm drives down the highway with an entire pallet of boxes sitting on top of the car.

Frank joked about what the driver might have been thinking. He suggested the person didn’t want to pay for shipping and decided to carry everything themselves instead. Viewers had a lot to say about the video in the comments. Many made jokes about the risky decision.

People online couldn’t believe someone would risk safety for savings

“This is so hilarious literally just got back from trying to ship my PC to bro after three stores told us $300 or higher,” one person commented. “I think he has more faith in that roof than Jesus,” another joked.

But not everyone found it funny. Some people were genuinely concerned about the danger. “I can’t believe people are willing to possibly cause a horrendous accident just to save a few dollars – not to mention the damage they are causing to the vehicle,” one person said.

Many also worried about the damage being done to the car itself. Highway accidents can have devastating consequences, as seen in a recent Georgia crash that killed seven people.

Another commenter pointed out that the car’s suspension system was probably struggling hard. The Geo Prizm shares many parts with the Toyota Corolla, including its suspension. That system wasn’t built to handle this kind of weight on the roof.

California driving rules clearly state that poorly loaded or unsecured cargo is a major safety risk. Cargo can fall off and hurt the driver or other people on the road. Several things determine if a vehicle can safely carry weight, including the tires, axles, and suspension. Stacking items too high can also shift the car’s balance and cause it to flip over.

A compact car should carry no more than 100 pounds on its roof. We don’t know what was inside those boxes or how much they weighed. The good news is the Prizm seemed to be driving below the speed limit.

Dangerous driving situations aren’t always intentional, like when a Kia driver fell asleep after working a grueling 20-hour shift. Signs that a car is overloaded include sagging suspension, trouble steering, and flat tires.
