Man uses $6,000 Cartier watch for bizarre first date test, leaving the woman totally confused by his cruel power move

The dating scene is already weird enough, but one woman recently shared her story after a perfectly nice first date morphed into an incredibly bizarre social experiment involving a $6,000 Cartier watch. Marshmeliii, who took her confusing experience to TikTok, shared that she was completely blown away when her date, after encouraging her to try on multiple high-end watches, ended weirdly.

He purchased one for a “friend” instead of for her, leaving her totally confused about the social rules of engagement. This is a truly awful dating tactic, and I can’t imagine putting someone through that kind of emotional rollercoaster just to prove a point. Marshmeliii’s video makes you feel like it could be the worst first date or just weird.

The date itself started out really well. They met at a restaurant located inside a mall, enjoyed their meal, and seemed to align on values. Marshmeliii remembers the evening going smoothly, but things took a strange turn once dinner was finished. The date suggested they run an errand together, which involved dropping into the luxury jewelry store, Cartier, per BroBible.

She remembers thinking, “OK, let’s go to Cartier. Let’s see what’s up,” feeling a slight sense of excitement. Once they were inside, the man started looking specifically at women’s timepieces. He began talking about pricing and actively encouraged Marshmeliii to try several different options on her wrist. Naturally, she started to wonder if he was getting ready to buy her a watch as an incredible first-date gesture.

That’s when the sad trombone moment hit, making the whole situation incredibly uncomfortable. He finally decided on a specific watch, which was estimated to cost between $5,000 and $6,000. When they got to the register, the salesperson asked, “Is this a gift?”

The date replied, “Yeah.” Marshmeliii’s hopes must have soared in that moment, but they were quickly dashed. The salesperson then gestured toward her and asked, “Is it for her?” Marshmeliii recalls his cold response: “No, it’s for a friend.” If that’s not a way to scare someone off on a first date, then it’s just weird.

She was completely blown away. Who buys a luxury watch for someone else on a first date, especially after making the person you’re with try on several options? This is a serious power move, and it’s definitely not a good look.

The TikToker decided that if he was going to flash deep pockets like that, she might as well try to get a little trinket herself. Earlier in the store, she had tried on a ring. So, she took her shot, asking him if he wanted to get her the ring too. In response, she says he just gave a short laugh and shook his head “no.” He walked out of the store having purchased the expensive watch for a mysterious friend, without ever giving Marshmeliii an explanation for the bizarre detour.

Marshmeliii summed up the entire experience best, saying, “I’m so confused, that was the weirdest first date I’ve ever been on wtf who buys another woman a Cartier watch on a first date with no explanation.” Even after sharing the story with the world, she still doesn’t have clarity, stating, “I still do not understand what the f— just happened.”
