A routine visit to a Manhattan gynecologist left one woman with questions she says she never expected to be asking after an ultrasound appointment. What happened next, according to her account, made her seek care somewhere else.
TikTok creator Becca shared her experience in a video warning other women about Garden OB/GYN, specifically its location at 67th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan. She had previously used the practice for routine appointments and did not initially mind being seen by different providers.
That changed during a recent annual appointment, when she underwent an ultrasound as part of her visit. While the technician was performing the scan, she noticed something unexpected on the monitor in front of her.
The ultrasound raised more questions than answers
According to Becca, the screen suddenly showed an image of a fetus, leaving her to question whether it could somehow be hers. “Oh my god, like that’s, that’s not my, that’s not me, is it,” she recalled saying before staff allegedly explained that the computer had displayed an image from “an eight-month pregnant patient who was here before you.”
The incident initially struck her as strange, but she became more upset after learning what the practice had reportedly found during her own examination. She was diagnosed with a dermoid cyst on her left ovary, which she felt was described to her in a way that left her frightened rather than reassured.
“They did not want to tell me what a dermoid cyst was because they were scared that I was going to freak out,” Becca said. She recalled being told that the cyst had “hair, teeth and nails,” a description that she said left her “genuinely on the verge of a panic attack.”
The situation allegedly became more concerning when staff discussed running blood work and checking tumor markers. She asked whether the mention of a tumor meant she needed to worry about cancer. According to her account, the student doctor responded, “I don’t know maybe.”
She also struggled to get clear answers about what the cyst could mean for her health, fertility and menstrual cycle. That lack of clarity has also come up in other accounts of difficult medical experiences shared on TikTok, where patients have described struggling to get answers about their own care.
At the time, Becca had not had a period in roughly three months and was trying to determine whether the cyst or her birth control could have been responsible.
The comments on the video included other viewers describing their own experiences with medical care. One wrote, “Failed to call me after abnormal test results. Absolutely, NEVER AGAIN.”
Another questioned the privacy aspect of the ultrasound incident, saying, “So it’s not a hipaa violation if there was no name on the screen but it’s absolutely not okay.”
Another commenter claimed to have had a negative experience with the practice, writing, “Omg girl. As of recently I USE to go to Garden OBGYN in Garden City the worst! I have stories for days.”
Becca said she eventually visited another practice, a step that can become necessary when patients feel they need a second opinion about what they have been told during an appointment. She claims a new ultrasound produced a significantly different measurement.
According to her, the cyst had been recorded as four centimeters at Garden OB/GYN but measured two centimeters during the later examination because the original measurement had allegedly included her ovary.
The second practice reportedly recommended monitoring the cyst rather than immediate surgery. For now, that appears to have given her some reassurance, but the experience has left her determined to warn other women about what she says happened at Garden OB/GYN. Her final message was less about the cyst itself and more about making sure other patients feel informed and heard during their own appointments.
“I wish that I was kidding about all of this,” she said. “I wish this wasn’t real. I wish that there weren’t women who experience the same things that I do.”
