Nightmare Costco employee goes psycho when woman won’t let her check husband’s bag, accuses customer of assault

But she didn't know that this customer wasn't going to go down that easy.

Costco has recently reached out to Washington resident, Kayla Faber, months after she shared her story on TikTok about a harrowing shopping trip where she claims a worker falsely accused her of assault. In the video, Faber details an incident that occurred while she was shopping with her husband, who was battling Stage 4 cancer at the time.

Faber recounted the distressing experience, explaining that she and her husband were leaving a Costco location when they encountered a receipt checker. Per BroBible, the situation took an unexpected turn when the receipt checker reportedly asked to inspect her husband’s backpack.

Faber immediately saw a problem with this request. She noted that his backpack contained essential medical supplies and sterile instruments necessary for his care. “My husband had stage 4 terminal cancer. He’s in a wheelchair. He’s hooked up to oxygen—he is very obviously sick. The bag had a lot of sterile instruments that he was using at the time—things that people shouldn’t be touching with their hands.”

The Costco employee then turned a conversation into a confrontation

Because of the delicate nature of the medical items and her husband’s fragile health, Faber refused, “So, I said, ‘No, she could not go through his bag.’” She told the worker that an inspection was not appropriate and mentioned the contents again, hoping to resolve the misunderstanding quickly.

She said the employee “started screaming and got irate,” creating an incredibly stressful environment. Concerned for her husband’s well-being, Faber told him to proceed to their car in his wheelchair while she tried to manage the confrontation. She tried to engage the worker in a calm dialogue, but soon realized her husband needed assistance to get into their vehicle. At this point, Faber took the receipt back from the worker and headed toward her car.

Still waiting on that apology @Costco Wholesale My husband will never get it but me and my kids would love to hear it.

It was then, according to Faber, that the worker made a shocking accusation. “She screams, ‘Help! Help! This woman just hit me! She assaulted me!’” Faber was adamant that this accusation was entirely false. She had been discreetly filming the entire interaction on her phone, which she believes provided irrefutable proof that she had not assaulted the employee.

Understanding the gravity of a false assault accusation, Faber immediately contacted the police. She said that they reviewed her video footage and confirmed that she had not, in fact, assaulted the employee. “That was so undeserved. That woman should not have a job,” Faber expressed. She also reflected on the potential consequences: “Imagine if I wouldn’t have been recording, or imagine if I would have been arrested for something I didn’t do.”

Costco is a low-cost option for many families, with clear pricing policies. Costco’s general operating policies, however, do state that they reserve the right to inspect “any container, backpack, briefcase, etc., upon entering or leaving the warehouse.” This policy applies broadly to all members and their belongings. Costco explains that verifying purchase receipts at the exit is a standard procedure “to double-check that the items purchased have been correctly processed by our cashiers.”

The company considers this its “most effective method of maintaining accuracy in inventory control,” and it also serves as “a good way to ensure that our members have been charged properly for their purchases.” While these policies are in place for operational reasons, the interaction Faber described highlights how they can become contentious. Also, some of their other policies around entry have also encouraged other TikTokers to reconsider their membership.

Replying to @animalmom124 This woman would scream for help after I grab my receipt and tell the whole crowd and security I assaulted her. I had to call the police request surveillance to prove my innocence. Mind you my husband was battling cancer and passed days after this interaction

It has been several months since the incident occurred, and unfortunately, Faber’s husband has passed away. After her story went viral, Faber says Costco “finally” called her to apologize and promise that they would “look into it.”

It was the accountability she wanted: to get “some acknowledgement of it… how hurtful that was and scary—and that it could have happened to somebody else, that maybe they would have actually got an assault charge for doing nothing wrong.”
