A North Carolina man’s dinner came with an unexpected bit of entertainment when he spotted a disruptive couple. However, once they got kicked out, he quickly realized it was all part of an elaborate dine-and-dash scheme.
TikToker Nate, who goes by @_smoothsayer, shared the story in a now-viral TikTok video that’s racked up over 153,000 views. His takeaway? These scammers are getting way too good at their game.
Nate and his wife were enjoying a meal at a rooftop restaurant in Charlotte when he noticed a couple finishing up their food and drinks. Then, another couple walked in and approached them. “They greeted them. Very loud, very exuberant,” Nate said in the video.
The two men soon began yelling at each other, drawing so much attention that security stepped in and kicked all four of them out. That’s when Nate put the pieces together. “That’s the play. Run up a tab and then set up a scene and get kicked out,” he explained. The caption on his video summed it up perfectly: “They literally executed this to PERFECTION.”
Nate might have unleashed the Kraken of dashers by sharing this story
The scheme was so smooth that it left viewers worried about how restaurants would respond. In the comments, one person predicted that places might start asking for a card on file before customers even sit down. “So now they will require a card when you’re seated,” they wrote.
Another joked, “Plot twist, they made them start a tab before you even got there.” A former server chimed in with a more practical approach, “From a retired server, I get payment soon as I see tension. Ion paying for nothing cause y’all wanna get into it,” she wrote.
Dine-and-dash schemes aren’t new, but they’re definitely evolving. Servers on Reddit’s r/talesfromyourserver subreddit have shared some of the wildest tricks they’ve seen on the job. One server recounted a recent incident where a customer complained about their food, and while the manager was comping the meal, the pair bolted. “Only a 60 dollar check but come on,” they wrote.
Another server warned that customers with extreme attitudes—either overly nice or outright rude—might be planning to skip out on the bill. “Basically, in my year’s experience, the patrons are either complete a– or the nicest people on the planet Earth,” they said.
Seating requests can also be a red flag. One server shared a story about a customer who asked to sit near the back door and then slipped out before the check arrived. It’s a reminder that if something feels off, it probably is. Restaurants are already tightening up their policies, and if these schemes keep getting more creative, you can expect even stricter rules when you go out to eat.
Recently, a server shared how she realized someone was going to dine and dash, by ordering too many things. One restaurant also shared the disgusting things a person will do to avoid paying their bill.

Nate’s video has already sparked a conversation about how to stop these scams. While you are out and about, maybe you need to keep an eye out for loud arguments at a table. If you find one, maybe you just found your entertainment, too.
