Leslie Nurse was checking out her family’s groceries at a Sims Walmart. Her husband and three kids were with her. Partway through, the scanner started acting up, and a store worker came over to help sort it out. Once the problem appeared to be sorted, she believed she had finished paying and headed for the door.
She didn’t make it outside before an asset protection manager stopped her. According to a video shared by the TikTok account Abccnews, Walmart accused her of failing to pay for roughly $48 worth of groceries. The accusation eventually led to her arrest and a mug shot.
The criminal charge was eventually dropped after nobody from Walmart showed up in court. But she said having the charge dropped didn’t undo the damage. She said the arrest hurt her reputation and made it harder to earn a living, a complaint similar to a North Carolina case.
The dropped charge wasn’t the end of it
Dropping the charge didn’t end the matter. Nurse kept getting letters from a law firm tied to Walmart. According to the account, the letters offered to drop the matter if she paid $200. The video says an expert also testified during Nurse’s lawsuit against Walmart about the company’s use of such letters.
Nurse’s case adds to a pattern shoppers have flagged around store receipts and checkout stops. A Kentucky woman said she was banned from a Walmart for a year after showing a worker her receipt and asking what she had not paid for.
The checkout footage became another issue. According to the account presented in the video, Walmart never produced footage from the self-checkout area, despite a camera being expected to record what happened there. According to the report, a jury ultimately sided with her and awarded her $2.1 million.
People in the comments quickly turned their attention to self-checkout. “Never use self checkout it’s a trap,” one person wrote. Another claimed to be dealing with a similar situation: “Oh my God I’m going to the same situation I got jury trial when I was paying they were f****** with the scanner and said that I didn’t pay for something oh my God same s*** here.” A third commenter was more direct: “I’m so f***ing tired of Walmart.”
Nurse’s case stands as one of the largest known payouts tied to a self-checkout dispute at Walmart. What started with roughly $48 worth of groceries ultimately ended with a $2.1 million verdict against Walmart.
