Oklahoma woman says Walgreens treated her ‘like this is an inconvenience’ over 30 missing pills, then agreed it owed her the medication

“I had never experienced this in my 40 years of life.”

It took a few days for Walgreens to resolve a customer’s complaint after she found 30 pills missing from her prescription. Until then, the Edmond, Oklahoma, customer said she was repeatedly dismissed, and she recorded the standoff on TikTok. Roxy Barber’s video went on to draw hundreds of thousands of views.

In her first video, Barber summarized the situation in the caption. “Walgreens 2nd and Bryant… HELP!!! After 5 hours, 1 pharmacy tech, 1 pharmacist and 2 ‘managers’ (Later they told me they were only shift leads those were their words) Nobody can tell me anything,” she wrote. “They said they checked the cameras but I overheard the manager talking to another staff member saying she could not tell from the footage.”

“Everyone I spoke with gave me different information,” Barber said. “I have never had to deal with the pharmacy shorting my prescription. I’m sure it was a mistake, but they don’t seem interested in correcting it.” In the video, she recorded her conversation with staff at the store. She wrote in the overlay text that they showed no sense of urgency and were sarcastic and dismissive.

“Nobody has any explanation or no idea of what happened to these 30… These 30 missing pills,” Barber told the pharmacist behind the counter. “Like, I’m being treated like this is an inconvenience for you.” The pharmacist replied, “I don’t want you to feel that way.” When Barber pushed for an inventory check, she said, the staff remained dismissive.

EDIT:THIS HAS BEEN RESOLVED AND MY MEDICATION HAS BEEN ISSUED TO ME! A person she identified as a manager in the overlay text said, “We didn’t make any mistakes on our end. We did what we were supposed to do and filled your prescription properly.” When Barber asked if the inventory had been counted, the manager replied, “Well, I don’t know. That’s up to them to do that.” Barber’s account could not be independently verified. Walgreens had not publicly commented at the time of publication.

Barber’s experience resonated with many commenters. One wrote, “Walgreens is getting worse in every way.” Another wrote, “I left Walgreens pharmacy & switched to Kroger bc i had so many issues with my prescriptions.”

According to Consumer Meds Safety, pharmacy errors can and do happen, but the response from staff is often what causes the most distress for patients. The organization says that when a mistake occurs, patients can reasonably expect an apology, a thorough investigation, and a plan to prevent it from happening again. Customers have described similar frustration with other health care companies, such as Los Angeles actress and disability advocate Cassidy Huff, who said a medical equipment company told her her BiPAP machine was on a “forever rental”.

@Walgreens has resolved the dispute and will be replacing the medication owed to me. Thank you to the store manager who jumped on it!!! I will move on to more pressing matters thank you to everyone who offered to help me legally and those who offered advice. I had never experienced this in my 40 years of life… lesson learned #medication #pharmacy #walgreens #resolution #thankyou

Two days after her initial post, Barber updated her viewers and said the situation had been resolved. She wrote in the caption, “@Walgreens has resolved the dispute and will be replacing the medication owed to me. Thank you to the store manager who jumped on it!!! I will move on to more pressing matters thank you to everyone who offered to help me legally and those who offered advice. I had never experienced this in my 40 years of life… lesson learned.”

In the video, Barber explained the resolution process. “Okay, so just a quick update, I did receive a call from the Walgreens pharmacy store manager. He said that him and the pharmacy manager did a recount and that they owe me 30 pills. The conversation lasted maybe 15 seconds. Uh, no drama. Uneventful. Pretty, like down to the point. It is what it is.”

Despite the outcome, Barber said she intends to switch pharmacies because of how she was treated. “I don’t like how his staff handled the situation, and I don’t appreciate how I was treated in the process.” She said, “They were authorized to do more than they were willing to do because they had already labeled me as a drug seeker and, um, just assumed that I was lying, even though I’ve never made a claim like this before.” In a separate viral video, a Texas nurse said she was accused of drug seeking after a Walgreens pharmacy gave her prescription to someone else.

Barber said she plans to move her prescriptions to a local drugstore.
