‘She was a victim’: Young girl in shock after doing the math and working out the age gap between grandparents

Age gaps in relationships can be touchy topics, especially when it comes to older generations. One young girl who did the math on TikTok was shocked to discover that her grandparents’ relationship was not exactly acceptable when they were younger.

TikToker “itssjacklynn” posted a clip of her niece coming to the realization that her grandmother was a “victim.” The couple have a ten year age gap and have been together for 35 years. Working it out it’s revealed that the girl’s grandmother, (and the mother of the woman recording) would have been 15 years old when the grandfather was 25.

The girl’s shock coupled with her confidence to call out the age gap has resonated with viewers on TikTok as the video has quickly garnered over 7 million views and 1.5 million likes. Many viewers enjoyed the girl’s sassy attitude, “That baby clutched her pearls,” commented one person. 

It started a debate on TikTok

While a few found the video comedic, others questioned the age gap with many wholeheartedly agreeing with the young girl that the grandmother was indeed a victim. “FIFTEEN AND TWENTY FIVE!?!!?” wrote one equally shocked viewer, “she’s 100% right!!!” Others commended the girl for being so aware at such a young age, “I love that she’s not normalizing it!”

While the adults at the table try to excuse the age gap by telling her “back then that didn’t exist,” the young girl doesn’t accept it and neither do the netizens on TikTok, “why are yall trying to gaslight her when she’s 100% correct!” asked a concerned individual.

In another video, “itsjacklynn” posts a somewhat tongue-in-cheek video with the caption, “POV You’re reading the comments about your dad.” While people insisted that the niece was right, she points out that it’s a part of the country’s (Mexico) history and while things have changed for the better when it comes to such standards, it was more normalized back then, “That was the culture in Mexico then. We’re not defending it, just not pretending history started when you guys logged on.”

She’s not entirely wrong, it’s not uncommon to learn that there were relatively large age gaps between husband and wife in our grandparents’ generation.

Perhaps that should be the focus, the fact that today’s younger generation are much more aware to larger age gaps and power imbalances in relationships is certainly a good sign things are headed in the right direction. Young people having the confidence to call that kind of stuff out is very reassuring. We may not be able to change the past, but we can learn from it and make sure the next generation don’t make the same mistakes.
