‘The snack fairy’: Couple says the husband’s in-flight bathroom repair earned them dozens of snacks

Rewarded for fixing a broken toilet paper holder.

A husband’s small repair job on an airplane turned into a snack windfall, according to a video posted by his wife on TikTok. Content creator Anna Grace Newell, who posts under the handle @annagracenewell, shared the clip that has been viewed more than 65,000 times, showing her husband, identified as Austin, surrounded by dozens of snack packets during a flight.

According to Newell, Austin fixed a broken toilet paper holder in the plane’s bathroom. She said the repair appeared to please the flight attendant, who reportedly responded by repeatedly giving Austin snacks for the rest of the flight.

“My husband fixed the toilet paper holder in the bathroom on the airplane (bc my man is handy)… The flight attendant was so overjoyed every time he walked by us he would sprinkle snacks on Austin’s tray,” Newell said in the video. She added, “So we were calling our flight attendant the snack fairy…Austin had like 50 packs of Oreos at the end of the flight lol.”

Toilet paper holders are typically classified as non-essential aircraft equipment

The video shows Austin seated on the plane, holding several small packets of Oreos, with many more piled on his tray table and around him. At one point, a flight attendant is seen placing additional snack packets onto his tray. Austin is shown smiling and holding up some of the snacks toward the camera.

A toilet paper holder would likely be classified by most airlines as non-essential equipment and furnishing, or NEF, according to AviationHunt. The outlet stated that such items “have no impact on the safe operation of the aircraft” and “won’t affect the aircraft’s ability to fly safely under any operational conditions.”

Most airlines reportedly do not set a fixed repair timeline for each piece of non-essential equipment, though many assign items a “repair interval” that falls into one of four deferral categories. Flight crews can typically expect non-essential repairs to be completed within three to 120 days, unless a manufacturer specifies a different window, according to Sky Safety Solutions.

The site also noted that non-essential equipment and furnishings usually cannot be repaired until at least one day after a service request is filed. It is not clear from Newell’s video how long the toilet paper holder had reportedly been broken before Austin fixed it. By contrast, more safety-relevant repairs, such as reattaching a loose seat, are generally addressed before takeoff, according to prior reporting.

Free snacks or small gestures from flight attendants toward considerate passengers are not unheard of. A flight attendant told Mental Floss that crew members will sometimes try to “give back” when a passenger “shows a little extra kindness,” though the outlet said this does not extend to significant upgrades or special treatment.

According to the flight attendant’s account in Mental Floss, such gestures might include “an extra snack, a top-up of a drink, a meal from another cabin if there’s one spare, or even serving tea or coffee in a china mug instead of the usual paper cup in economy.”

Flight attendants stepping in to help passengers has come up in other reported incidents as well, including one case where a flight attendant helped a passenger through a post-surgery medical emergency. Several viewers responded to Newell’s video in the comments section. “I’m kicking my feet lol this is so funny,” one commenter wrote.

Another described a similar experience involving a flight attendant’s kindness during a stressful flight. “I was on a flight alone at 18 and a flight attendant kept tossing me cookies cuz I visibly was holding back tears from flight nerves 😬,” the commenter wrote, adding, “Life saver.” Not all reported interactions between flight attendants and passengers have been positive, as seen in an incident involving a flight attendant flying as a passenger.

Other commenters on Newell’s video, however, indicated they would respond similarly to a helpful passenger. “I would probably do the same. We love helpful passengers,” one viewer wrote. Newell’s video carried the caption, “flight attendant = snack fairy 🧚!!! Headed somewhere fun #333.”
