‘They came for help’: Highland cows seek out campers to rescue her baby that’s trapped in ditch

Some animals are smarter than we give them credit for. Take cows for example, specifically Highland cows, as evidenced by a TikTok showing the fluffy cattle approaching humans in a camper van in order to enlist their help.

The cows surrounded a van inhabited by Chelsea Ogden, a TikToker who documents her life living and travelling in her camper van. However, in a viral clip we can see that her van is surrounded by a family of Highland cows. The mother stands at the front while the baby bull is off to the side and another cow stands behind the vehicle, essentially blocking them in.

I know what you’re thinking but no, this wasn’t a robbery and the cows weren’t trying to steal Chelsea’s van. As a matter of fact they wanted her help. The small herd had been close to the van for several days and it seems the animals had figured this was their best shot at getting the help they needed. 

Chelsea soon figured out that something was wrong as one of the baby cows was missing from the group and so her partner stepped out to follow the herd. Sometimes humans find themselves in a situation where they have to step up and help a wild animal. This was one of those times.

They led him to a ditch where the baby had become trapped and with the help of a few other men standing by they were able to pull the baby out of the ditch. At one point it looks like it took four people just to lift the calf showing how heavy even a baby cow can be. But in the end it was reunited with its mother and family.

Was the baby okay?

Naturally the people of TikTok demanded updates on the baby cow to make sure that it was okay and Chelsea was happy to provide. In an update video she shared a clip of the young cow looking healthy and very happy to not be in a ditch anymore.

Viewers were thrilled with the update as they thanked Chelsea and her partner for rescuing the cow, “So good to see them all well and happy, thankyou,” wrote one commenter. “What absolutely stunning animals they are and to think your actions have allowed him to carry on with his life. Wonderful humans just wonderful,” added another.

Highland cows are a particularly hardy breed of cow that are most commonly found in the Scottish Highlands. While they are well adapted to their environment it’s still possible for them to get trapped in ditches and holes, especially at such a young age, so it’s more than possible that calf could have died had Chelsea, her partner, and the others there, not intervened to rescue it.
