A man in California went back to the counter at a 7-Eleven to ask for change he said he never got. What started as a quick question over an energy drink turned into a police call, a parking lot confrontation, and an alleged threat to bring in ICE.
Kevin, who posted the video on TikTok, filmed the exchange after buying a drink at his local 7-Eleven. As first reported by The Nerd Stash, he paid with a $20 bill and said the cashier handed back less than she owed him.
He didn’t think it was a big deal. He simply asked for the rest of his money. The cashier saw it differently and called the police before she even tried to sort out the register. Getting the wrong change can cause problems in either direction. Earlier this year, a Sephora shopper had his own problem over exact change after a cashier allegedly handed him far more money than he was owed.
The cashier tells police a different story
In the video, the cashier speaks with police while Kevin tries to explain the mix-up. He says he gave her a $20 and didn’t get proper change back. The cashier tells police he was ‘yelling’ at her, though his voice remains level in the footage. In his caption, Kevin wrote he was “trying to stay calm” through it all.
She then tells police she can’t find the transaction as she searches for it. As she keeps searching, she snaps at him on camera. “Now the idiot’s recording me!” she says. She also describes Kevin to police as “Hispanic” and in his 20s. Kevin laughs it off, tells her he needs to get to work, and gives her his name so officers can follow up later.
He posted a follow-up from the parking lot. Kevin says the cashier came out to the parking lot and started recording his car. He claims she also told him she was going to call ICE on him. According to Kevin, the entire dispute began over the change from one energy drink.
Commenters had plenty to say about what happened at the register. One person asked bluntly, “Why was the drink 8 dollars?” Another suspected something else was going on: “Because she’s most likely pocketing money from the till. Why wouldn’t she give him a receipt? I’m not sure about anyone else in here but I always get a receipt at 7-Eleven or at least they will ask me if I want my receipt.” Someone else offered a practical fix: “Pull the camera footage from the store and see how much change she gave you.”
Others focused on something Kevin apparently didn’t have: a receipt. A Walgreens customer recently used his own receipt to challenge an employee after an item scanned at one price but the store allegedly tried to charge another.
Another commenter had similar advice: “Always ask for a receipt, always!! Lesson learned for future interactions.”
As of this writing, 7-Eleven does not appear to have publicly addressed Kevin’s claims. It’s unclear whether the company took any action following the incident.
