‘Why am I being punished for being single?’: Woman kicked out of café for being alone, but not everyone thinks the server was in the wrong

Many on TikTok think the café was actually well within it's rights to refuse service.

A woman on a solo traveling trip has taken to TikTok to complain about a bizarre café policy which saw her get kicked out of the establishment for being alone. The woman saw it as her being punished for being alone but not everyone on TikTok agreed with her.

Solo traveling has certainly seen a great deal more interest in recent years with it being more popular than ever to visit new places alone. Be it to save on expenses or just make things simpler it’s very common to see people out and exploring the world on their own, many of them document their travels on platforms such as TikTok.

One such travel influencer is TikToker “@kristainspain” who is originally from Florida but is sharing snippets of her life traveling around Spain and other parts of Europe on TikTok. In a recent video which has received over 1.2 million views, Krista discusses a frustrating experience she had in a tea room in Ghent, Belgium.

“Here I am again, getting punished for traveling alone,” she states, before going on to explain how she was refused service at the table. Krista claims she had called ahead to book “tea” but when she arrived and tried to order “high tea,” which is tea with an assortment of snacks and pastries, she was informed “it’s for two people only.”

After a bit of back and forth with the owner Krista was ultimately refused the service and so she packed up her things and left.

Not everyone on TikTok thinks the café was in the wrong

Many agreed that it was wrong that Krista was essentially being “punished” for traveling alone, even going as far as to name and shame the tea room. However, even more disagreed with Krista’s perspective, claiming that it’s commonly known that high tea is a meal for two. While the TikToker argued in the comments that she wasn’t informed of this when she made the booking, it sounds the owner was not aware she was expecting high tea.

“As a Belgian, I just want to pop in here and say a reservation for tea is not the same as high tea.” one commenter clarified. Suggesting the servers may have thought Krista was simply booking a table for tea and a slice of cake.

Many also understood the decision to make the high tea as a serving for two, “If that’s the business calculation on offer, I respect it.” one comment reads, “Being solo doubles their work and halves their profits. I get it.” Perhaps if Krista was willing to pay the full price or simply ordered a tea and pastry rather than the high tea she may not have had to leave.
