A Goodwill customer is speaking out after claiming she witnessed a struggling man being publicly embarrassed over a pair of shoes, prompting her to return to the store and question the manager about how employees handled the encounter.
TikTok creator Azaleah shared a video of her conversation with the manager, explaining that she wanted to file a formal complaint over what she described as a lack of compassion toward the man. The video has since gained attention online, with viewers weighing how stores should respond when suspected theft involves someone who may also be struggling.
According to Azaleah, the incident happened when a man entered the store and allegedly tried to leave wearing a pair of shoes while leaving his old pair behind. She said the man appeared to be struggling financially and became apologetic when employees stopped him, telling them he only had a small amount of money and was trying to save it for food.
Azaleah’s concerns about the way the man was treated
Azaleah told the manager that employees could have handled the situation differently by protecting the man’s dignity instead of confronting him publicly. “She should have just given him the shoes. She should not have confronted him in the middle of the store for everyone to witness,” she said, arguing that the employee could have pulled him aside privately and explained the store’s assistance options.
The creator also criticized how employees allegedly discussed the incident afterward, saying their comments made it seem like a victory rather than an uncomfortable customer interaction involving someone who may have been struggling.
“She made a comment about how, like, oh, we got one. We never catch them. I can’t believe we caught one,” Azaleah told the manager, saying she felt the remark was inappropriate because “you have no idea what that man is going through or what him, his circumstances might be.”
Her concerns also centered on how an employee allegedly explained Goodwill’s assistance programs to the customer. The nonprofit retailer has faced other viral customer complaints, including questions about how donated items are priced and sold.
Azaleah said the exchange came across as though help was only available if someone knew how to ask for it. “If you had just asked, we would have helped you. We would have given these to you,” she recalled the employee saying, arguing that the response failed to account for why someone in need might not feel comfortable asking for assistance.
Azaleah later questioned whether someone’s worth should be judged based on one mistake. She told the manager, “It’s not any one person’s job to decide who can, who should be helped and who shouldn’t.”
She also admitted she wished she had stepped in sooner, telling the manager, “I should have spoken up and offered to buy his shoes for him. And I, in the moment, choked up and I didn’t. And that’s on me.”
Comments on the video showed many viewers supporting Azaleah’s concerns, while others focused on how Goodwill handles suspected theft. One commenter wrote, “Mind you, those shoes were donated for FREE,” pointing out that the items were donated goods being resold.
Another viewer encouraged Azaleah to escalate the matter beyond the store, writing, “She won’t take care of it. Make sure you call corporate and make sure to tell them exactly what store the issue was at.”
A person claiming to work at Goodwill also weighed in on store procedures, writing, “I work at a goodwill and the policy is NOT to confront shoplifters.”
Goodwill stores are independently operated in many regions, and policies can vary between locations. While the video captures Azaleah’s account and her conversation with the manager, it does not show the original interaction with the customer.
For Azaleah, the issue was not simply about a pair of shoes, but about whether someone experiencing hardship could still be treated with dignity.
