A TikTok video showing a woman’s reaction to her engagement ring has gone viral, gathering 13.8 million views, 833,200 likes and more than 6,400 comments. The video was posted by creator Rochelle Evelyn (@rochelleevelyn14).
The clip shows her boyfriend proposing on a rocky outdoor ledge overlooking a forest. After he asks, “Will you marry me?” and places the ring on her finger, she looks at it and says, “It’s so blue. I didn’t know it was gonna be blue.” When he asks if she likes it, she replies, “Yeah, I thought it was really pretty.”
The TikTok video caption included an edit note addressing backlash: “I’m truly sorry that the statement ‘it’s so blue, I didn’t know it would be so blue’ said 4 minutes after I said yes and finished crying and telling my fiancé how happy I am equals that I am ungrateful and is making people SOOOO mad.” The caption also included the line, “It’s so pretty but tbh not for me”
Viewers reacted strongly to the proposal video
The video’s on-screen text reads, “POV: your boyfriend finally proposes, but you’re distracted bc the diamond is BLUE blue.” Many viewers focused on her reaction and the exchange about the ring’s color, with comments including, “‘Do you like it?’ Girl do YOU??” and “That’s so disrespectful.”
Other commenters said couples should discuss ring preferences beforehand. One comment read, “Let’s normalise asking your girlfriend the type of engagement rings she likes.” Another said, “Let’s normalize not having to wear a ring we don’t like for the rest of our lives. I don’t think it’s wrong to tell your partner you don’t love your ring.”
A third added, “Yeah I would be disappointed to get a ring I don’t love. It’s the most significant piece of jewelry a woman gets, he should know what you like.” Another simply wrote, “He deserves better.” Ring mix-ups can lead to awkward moments, as when a woman discovered her fiancé was already married and her ring came from a pawn shop.
One commenter responded by writing, “I can’t imagine how he feels hearing this after proposing.” Rochelle replied to that comment, explaining that the ring color was a mix-up. She wrote that she had picked out the ring beforehand and had told her fiancé what she wanted, and that he had gotten her “exactly that.”
She added, “We’re both just so excited to be engaged to each other. The ring is beautiful, I just prefer a white diamond.”
Rochelle later posted an update video on TikTok to clarify the situation, explaining that she and her partner had been discussing engagement for six to eight months and had been looking at rings together. She had sent him information about a specific setting she wanted. She said, on the ring website, diamond options were listed with labels, including “fancy pink” and, under a different quality grade, “fancy blue.”
She said the diamonds she had been looking at were listed near “fancy pink,” which led her to believe she was open to a pink stone. When her partner went to buy a higher-quality version, she said he saw “fancy blue” and thought that was what she had wanted. Rings can inspire strong reactions, such as when a customer tries on a ring and then pretends to put it back before swallowing it.
She said the online image of the diamond appeared lighter than the stone actually is, so her partner thought the blue tint might just be a reflection. “Neither one of us knew it was blue,” she said, adding that both of them were surprised. She also said he did not pick out the ring himself; she had picked it, and he had tried to get her a higher-quality version.
She said in the update that she loves the ring itself but does not love how it looks on her hand. She also addressed her reaction during the proposal, saying she has ADHD and that the ring was “very sparkly.” She said she was excited about the proposal and about marrying her partner, whom she called her best friend.
She also mentioned that she was wearing a placeholder ring while a replacement diamond was being made, and said the new ring would arrive in about two weeks. She ended the video by saying, “I’m not ungrateful. I’m not unhappy. My partner and I are so in love.”
Rochelle later posted a third video on TikTok showing the new ring after it arrived. The video is presented as satire. In it, she shows off the new ring, then jokingly says she misses the blue diamond and suggests the new ring looks “basic.” Her partner responds by asking if the change is making her “feel blue,” and she replies, “You’re so insensitive. Like, are you f–king kidding me right now?” She continues the bit by saying, “TikTok knows best.”
