Buying your first home is a big deal for anybody, especially in this economy. A new home is a clean slate, a chance to truly craft your own home from scratch and most, if not everyone, would want to have total control over how their own home is decorated. However, one woman on TikTok has shared how her less than supportive parents decided to throw a tantrum and make this huge milestone all about them.
The woman, who goes by “leavethisgirliealone” on TikTok, asked viewers, “Is it normal that I’ve just bought a house and on the first day of being in my new home, my parents picked a fight with me and haven’t spoken to me since?” She goes on to explain that the day after picking up the keys for her new home she stopped by her parents house where her mother proceeded to bombard her with decoration ideas.
The daughter kindly rejected her mother’s ideas which makes sense as it’s her house after all, but that only led to an outburst from the petulant mother who berated her daughter for not allowing her to be as involved as she wanted to be.
Now her parents are threatening to cut her off
Not only did the mother have a complete meltdown over the situation, but she also swore at her daughter which she says upset her a great deal. Surprisingly, her father also took the mother’s side in the argument, calling the daughter “abrasive.”
She revealed that since that day her parents have not contacted her despite previous arrangements for her mother to come round and see the house during the week. The whole ordeal has understandably left her feeling confused and saddened as buying your first home is a big deal but that memory is somewhat soured by her parents’ response to what should have been a calm conversation.
In a second video, the daughter says she spoke on the phone with her father and he revealed that her mother intends to cut her off forever unless she apologizes despite the fact she did nothing wrong. The daughter explains that she doesn’t want to apologize and that she thinks her mother is the one who owes her an apology.
We’ve seen children who, as adults, cut off their parents but usually there’s a good reason for them doing so. For a parent to cut off their child because they didn’t want them to decorate their home seems like an extreme overreaction.
Commenters on TikTok labeled the woman’s mom a narcissist while others shared their own experiences with controlling parents cutting them off. “I had to cut my mother off years ago for similar behaviour.” One person commented, “The peace is unreal!” Others recommended going no contact, although it seems her parents have already done that for her.
